Stripes & Sand on Galveston Island. We’re Not in California Anymore

After a nearly 4-hour drive from Dallas to Houston a few weeks ago, we decided to forge on to the gulf.  Yep! Galveston. The coast, the ocean, the sand – we were so excited! We’d heard about the coastal resort town, but didn’t know what to expect as we drove across the bridge with the huge oil refineries in the distance and that familiar coastal smell in the air. As we parked near Pleasure Pier (it’s a bit like the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk of Texas), the humidity hit our faces the moment we stepped out of our air-conditioned SUV.

We’re not in California anymore,’ I thought as my hubby, baby bump, and Wilhelmina made our way to the beach. The water looked slightly dingy and dirty as we approached, but it was actually clear as we walked through ankle deep. There were families swimming and splashing about, but it wasn’t packed. After a jelly fish rolled by, a dead crab washed up, followed by a kid next to us catching a couple struggling fish with his bare hands; we made our way back to the car. Here’s a quick beach walk on our adventure to Galveston Island…

Galveston Beaches – There are no lifeguards from what I could see and it didn’t seem like people swam too far into the gulf. These strong warnings were posted.

Beach Bump Attire – Nearly 8 months pregnant now, I’ve been living in these simple stretchy dresses by Old Navy paired with simple sandals or my white Superga sneakers.

Galveston Go-to Guide – Galveston was devastated by Hurricane Ike in ’08 has a coastal charm of it’s own. Although I don’t know if I’d make a special trip there any time soon, I recommend checking it out if you’ll be in Houston during the non-Hurricane months (although I’m not so sure this is a spot you’d spend a week-long holiday vacay). Check out Galveston.com for a list of attractions.

  1. Dale, I’m so glad you went before Hurricane Harvey! It’s beautiful there! I’ve been to Galveston, TX. I stayed at Moody Gardens. They were really nice. Gorgeous pics. I love your dress. You look so chic.

    • Thank you so much Kim and I will have to check out Moody Gardens next time we’re down there. So sad what has happened in all of the cities down near Galveston from Hurricane Harvey. 🙁
