Back to School in Big Bird Yellow

The past week has been a ‘Back to School‘ photo frenzy filling my Facebook feed with adorable pics capturing the first day back for friends and family from preschool to post grad. Time really flies when you’re raising kids! From Skyping with my mom in California, a 4th grade teacher, helping her choose outfits virtually for her week to the ‘bus safety’ segment on Good Morning America; it’s been non-stop school talk.

While I don’t have to worry about ‘Back to School‘ pics for a few years; I do have some ‘continuing education‘ to prioritize. I’ve been told by other Expat parents the best way to teach your child multiple languages is that one parent (my husband) will only speak (in German) to Wilhelmina while I’ll talk to her in English. TranslationI better improve my German skills. I can just imagine complicated dinner conversations, car rides, and I don’t want to think about the teenage years if she’s fluent in German and I’m not. For now though, I’m enjoying the baby stages and can easily translate the goo-goo-ga-ga’s. In the spirit of the new school year, while we were out last weekend, I wore a preppy look in primary colors with my new fave Big Bird yellow top…

Back to School Style – I’m LOVING this Zara top with tiny bird print. And I always have a navy blue basic prepster style skirt in my closet. It can always be paired with a collared button down shirt.

Is Red Lipstick Appropriate in the Classroom? – Whether for a teacher or student, you make the call about the red lipstick, but I decided to sport my favorite ‘Russian Red‘ shade by MAC Cosmetics.

Back to Basics Englisch – I found this mini dictionary at a discount store (Aldi) near Zurich the other day and love it! Besides fitting in all my mini handbags, it’s much easier for my brain to look up the word in English and see how to say it in German, rather than a pure German dictionary.

Loafer Love – I’ve seen leather (or in my case faux leather) loafers noted in fashion mags as a Fall 2015 shoe must-have! Theses navy blue loafers are so comfortable, more dressed up than sneakers, and can easily be worn with jeans, skirts or preppy dresses. Channel your inner ‘Gossip Girl’ with a pair of loafers.

<DETAILS> top (recent) & skirt – Zara / Ferragamo mini-bag (last seen here in Hamburg) / Chloé sunglasses (Last Call Neiman Marcus) / loafers (old) – Zara / nails – LVX 046 ‘Monaco’

  1. Cute post Dale – I did my back to school with my post about shopping for Cassia going back to school 😉 Today I have been consumed by yellow – filling up a pointers board with yellow items…must be in the air 😉

PS: that with one parent speaking English and the other German – may be the ideal situation but doesn’t really work from my experience and in the end they get lots of German at school so its OK to make English the language at home – I think 😉

  2. I love the fact that she will be fluent in 2 or more languages Dale! They do suggest to start young. They pick things up quickly that way. Great outfit.

  3. My youngest started back to school for grade 7… so far she’s enjoying it xox … Your outfit is really cute Dale, I like the yellow with the navy… it’s a classic look xox … Your daughter is so adorable♡

  4. Love your fun yellow top!

Would love to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.
