Rock 70’s Jeans WITHOUT Looking like Jessica Simpson

Have you ever seen a fashion trend and initially said to yourself, “No way, I will never be caught wearing (insert trend here)_______? But then, somehow, you come around and actually wear it and LIKE it!?

You may recall these pics plastered everywhere of Jessica Simpson in January ’09 wearing an extremely unflattering outfit, including high-waisted jeans. Everyone has bad days.

Remember this infamous fashion faux-pas?

The leopard WWE belt and spandex tank did not help matters.

I will NEVER wear these stupid high-waisted jeans,” I thought.
Fast forward about six seasons and guess what I’ve been wearing this Spring? Yep, high-waisted 70’s jeans.

My Tips to Wearing 70’s Jeans:
1. They’re best with somewhat flowy or fitted tops tucked in or just above the waist. Make sure the top isn’t
too big with wide flared jeans. It needs to balance and skintight shirts like Jessica’s don’t usually work.

2. Cinch your waist with a belt (not too thick) if you want. I prefer brown belts with 70’s jeans.

3. Make sure the jeans are long enough for heels, I’ve noticed many brands are high-waters. Ugh

4. These jeans tend to accentuate hips and flatten butts, which is why I leave my shirt partially untucked. 🙂

5. Wear them with wedges or platform heels. I like neutral colors best.

Here is my attempt to pull them off and what I’ve noticed works to make this difficult jean style look as flattering as possible and fun to wear.

Go casual- My white cotton tank is H&M

Leather belt- H&M , Jeans-Forever 21 Heritage brand
A fringe handbag would have been more 70’s but I had my bright purse that day

It’s OK to tuck the front of the shirt in and leave the rest untucked

Steve Madden shoes I bought in ’08 when everyone was buying gladiator sandals
(They’re working now with the 70’s trend, SAVE shoes you think will work with trends later)

Here are a few celebs who recently wore 70’s jeans well:

Annalynne McCord in J Brand Jeans

Audrina Patridge looking cute in a flowy top and dark wash.
I just wish her jeans were longer

Jenna Duwan looking 70’s chic in AG Jeans

What do you think of high-waisted flared jeans because I’m not sure how long this trend will last? And if you wear 70’s jeans, do you have any secrets to not pulling a Jessica Simpson in this style?  😉

Have a great week!

I think the big difference between you & the celebs, and miss Simpson is the wash of the jeans as well. She has the signature Walmart blue goin on…

  2. Anonymous says:

hehe…I see someone is getting ready for this weekend. You can definitely rock a 70’s jean but do you have any tips for those of us that are wearing a gopher’s suit? haha…jk

  3. Demisdays says:

They look a whole lot better on you than on Jessica!

  4. OMG you look so much better than jessica did. I think she was in denial of her size trying to fit into clothes that were too small. Had she fit her actualy size she would have looked a lot better

  5. I actually prefer these types of jeans over the hip hugging ones…I dont grasp the look where ur crack shows every time you bend over. Lol

    Looks great!!

  6. You look sooo chic! Love that you paired them with just a plain tank…so flattering, so lovely!

  8. i love 70s jeans. i have a topshop flare that is the spitting image of the chloe jeans kate moss wore to a topshop fashion show years ago and i love them dearly.

    best wishes,

  9. ChaosButterfly says:

lol, poor Jessica. She had all that pep in her step too.

But you look really good in them!

And I wish that Audrina’s pants were longer too…I can’t stand highwaters. I just wanna run up and yank them down or cut them short or something to just make them look normal. -___-

  73. Maryam Maquillage says:

Terrific post!!! you look fabulous in your 70’s jeans! I have to admit, I’ve been very skeptical about these because of the butt part… I don’t know if it makes it flatter, but it definitely makes it appear longer and bigger, but not in a positive way… I like that you wore your tank half untucked, that actually works and I’m going to try it! Thanks :)))
