Sweater Weather in Spain

Dale Janee Savvy Spice fashion blog Barcelona

Hola! Throughout the past year I’ve visited a few different countries in Europe and so far, my favorite is Spain. Maybe it’s the familiar language I heard so often growing up in California or maybe it’s the laid-back friendly atmosphere, affordable shopping and delicious tapas, but I love it.

Last weekend we celebrated my husband’s birthday in Barcelona. While it’s very touristy toward the city center, we explored and the mild weather was a welcome treat to run around in just a sweater, skinny jeans and sneakers. Here’s a little tour through Barcelona accessorized with my strawberry Cornetta Soft Serve ice-cream I ordered daily from the street vendors… [Read more…]

Green Carpet CatFight at the Zurich Film Festival

Zurich Film Fest Savvy Spice Liam Neeson Catfight Dale Janee

Movie buff or not, if you’ve seen the movie ‘Taken‘ you know this quote – ‘I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.’

Over the weekend, Liam Neeson was the guest of honor and final red green carpet attraction during the 10th Annual Zurich Film Festival. I was excited to go. I had picked up my press pass earlier in the week and gotten into a bit of a tiff with the young woman behind the press booth who clearly didn’t like me. As I walked toward the green carpet to snap some pics Friday night, I noticed her giving me the stink-eye from her counter. I didn’t think much of it until I was approached by a tall blond in a trench coat on the green carpet. She was on a mission…

But first, here’s Liam and the two founders of the Zurich Film Festival – the dapper Karl Spoerri and the gorgeous, statuesque Nadja Schildknecht who had the vision for the ZFF over a decade ago. Now it’s the über fancy, no-expense-spared success it is today. She’s an impressive entrepreneur too, check out this article. Now, back to the CATFIGHT.

A PR woman in the trench coat pointed to me in the little press crowd and said, ‘Hi, who are you here representing? I need to see your pass.’ I showed her press pass immediately. Granted, I know I wouldn’t be given access to a Hollywood movie premiere and I’m not with the Associated Press or a major news source, but this is Zurich. Zurich is small, super expensive and there aren’t exactly hoards of reporters here so my press pass was easily approved a month ago. She went on, ‘You’re actually just a blogger, so I just can’t have you here…’ Gulp, was I being kicked off the green carpet?

I instantly felt a lump of humiliation in my throat and thought, Oh no, this is so embarrassing, should I just go?,’ but decided to argue a bit first. After a couple minutes, she didn’t want to deal with me and walked away saying,I’ll be back.’

Five minutes later, another woman approached me in a leather jacket and said, ‘You’re not on my list and you’re just a blogger, so I need you to leave.’ Ugh, another one. Round 2. What should I do? What would Liam do? What would you do? What would TMZ do? I spun around, whipped out my iphone and said, ‘Look, I’d like to talk to your manager and I’m going to record how you’re talking to me,’ then I pressed the red button. She looked very uncomfortable and was gone within 60 seconds.

Finally, after snapping my pics and VINE, Liam walked off the mean, green, carpet scene toward the crowd of adoring fans waiting to see him. A final supervisor approached me and said, ‘I just want to say that you actually shouldn’t have been here because you’re just a blogger…Round 3.

I’d had enough, so I just blurted it out the woman’s name behind the ticket booth who I knew had called the pack of PR women. She looked surprised and admitted she was called by the woman and saw I was visibly upset. She apologized immediately and said the ‘mean girl’ was a temp worker and was embarrassed by her actions. I thanked her and took off for some Mövenpick (my favorite ice-cream in the world) to ease my hurt feelings.

As we walked away, I looked over at my husband who’d never been approached by the 3 women, except one who asked politely, ‘Will you be needing an interview with Liam Neeson?’ And the whole time, he stood there with his ‘press credential’ lanyard around his neck printed with his name and title, ‘Photographer for SavvySpice.com.’ I’d had my slice of humble pie and now it was time for a big, fat, scoop of Macadamia dulce de leche ice-cream.

Although the green carpet wolvettes put a bit of a damper on my night out in Zurich, I learned a valuable lesson. It doesn’t matter who or where you are – maybe you work in the corporate world, in a restaurant, as a teacher, maybe you’re a small time blogger from San Francisco, a mom in the park, or even Oprah – you will run into situations when you need to deal with ‘mean girls’ who will treat you poorly.

Here’s 3 Important Tips to Deal with ‘Mean Girls’ in Life-

1.  If a gatekeeper is rude to you, maintain your composure and try to be nice. You never know the lengths she will go to make life harder for you. You remember the Seinfeld and Sex and the City episodes where this happened to Elaine & Samantha.

2. Always judge a situation and your safety of course, but if you’re being treated unfairly or being disrespected, never be embarrassed or afraid to stick up for yourself.

3. Get names and take numbers. If you’re being treated like garbage, especially by customer service, get the person’s name or business card so you look more credible if you need to escalate it to someone in charge.

Have you ever had a ‘mean girl’ in life or at work who just didn’t like you, and what ‘particular set of skills’ would you recommend to deal with the situation?

Hope you had a great weekend and I have a Big Giveaway Coming this Wednesday!

‘The Work Date’ ~ Techs and the City

Savvy Spice fashion blog Dale San Francisco

I remember growing up and my mom and dad were constantly saying to each other, ‘you’re running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.‘ Whether we were packing for a vacation, getting ready for school or spring cleaning; the truth is we were a family of crazy chickens. So by the time I moved out, a bit chaos with a smidge of adventure was just how I preferred life. If you’ve ever felt like this too, you can find solace in this quote by Buddha, ‘Chaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence.’

Of course, my husband on the other hand, is 100% the total, complete, opposite. Martha Stewart would be jealous of his organizational skills. So when we were back in SF this month, I had two days in the city to get A LOT of errands done. Rather than show him my never-ending to-do list; I said, ‘I need your help with a few things today, this is going to be so fun running around the city together!’ You’ve heard of play dates, but this day was purely a ‘work date‘ in San Francisco from sunrise…

<Bright and Early!> The only thing I love about the jet lag from Zurich–>SF is for 1 week I’m wide awake and ready to take on the day at 6 am. After replying to a few emails and checking out my daily dose of fashion bloggers – many who were at NYFW with their own ‘meetings’ that sounded much more exciting than my day – but here we go.  First, a quick walk to Jamba Juice in my Northface fleece and makeup free face. Pics unavailable.

<Fifi is Back in Action> No parking ticket…Yes! I love Fifi, my little Fiat, in SF. She makes my life so much easier zipping through the city finding parking in a snap. It was off to Copy World in The Dogpatch where I’ve gone for years to print all my business cards, brochures and press kits.

<Handle with Care> The next stop was one of my favorites, The Packaging Store, in SF where I order all my packaging materials for Savvy Sleepers. I promised we’d grab a coffee after if he helped me pick out tissue paper and stickers.

<Wallee Time> After the long morning, he really needed to get out, take a breather, and stretch his legs. After all, Wallee is the CEO of The City Supply Co. Apparel.

<Take Me Down to South Park> If you’ve never been to this little hidden park in SOMA a couple blocks from AT&T Park, check it out. I met my brother and a few friends for a meeting about a new fashion start-up. I had the cobb salad and a side of app chat.

<Time to hit the Road!> A couple more stops in Marin and we were off to Mendocino County. After a morning like this, guess who was more than happy to hop in the car for a 2 hour drive to his in-laws? Success!

That’s it for this episode of ‘Techs in the City.‘ Hope you have a great weekend!

Shop Talk & The Other Woman in Walnut Creek

Shop Talk Savvy Sleepers Dale Janee Brittany Longden

Have you ever had a job, hobby or perhaps a TV show or video game addiction that you could only discuss with a few people in the entire world? The definition of ‘Shop Talk‘ is ‘talk about your business or hobby that only others in the same business can understand.’ For me, one of those people for over a year now has been Brittany, who is a big part of the marketing, sales and social media interaction behind Savvy Sleepers.

When we met up in Walnut Creek last week in the California sun, I wore a look that was purely inspired by Cameron Diaz in ‘The Other Woman.’ On a side note, the movie was blah, but I loved Cameron’s wardrobe and for some reason, my tolerance for cheesy chick-flicks goes up with the altitude on long flights. Now back to Brittany! Here’s several moments from our meeting, plus SECRETS to running your own small business wherever you are in the world…

Brit Back-Story – I first met Brittany at a Chico State career fair as she was about to graduate last year. Not only is she a natural at sales and marketing, she has helped me run my business especially when I’m working from Switzerland. PS – Chico State, my Alma Materwas just voted in the top 10 Public Universities on the West Coast by US News & World Report.

Time Zones Don’t Matter – If you’re thinking about starting your own business now (or maybe as a New Year’s Resolution) don’t plan on sleeping much. But you won’t miss it if you’re excited about doing something new. I loved meeting Brittany face-to-face and when I’m in Zurich we are constantly communicating online. I sleep 5-6 hours a night so I can work mornings in Zurich, be home to make East Coast calls, and be up very late to call, Skype and email when California is doing business. Let’s just say, with a 9-hour time difference, my basic addition/subtraction skills have really improved.

#StayConnected! –  Please don’t ignore social media! It’s the easiest (free) way to watch trends in your industry, discover niches of your target audience, network, drive traffic and market your biz initially to your local community. Connect your Facebook, twitter, and instagram together immediately so you can easily share in less than 60 seconds so social media doesn’t seem like a huge chore.

Hair Model Brittany Savvy Sleepers1

Sharing is Caring, and So is Listening – It doesn’t hurt that Brittany’s gorgeous hair is straight out of a Panteen Pro-V commercial when she’s promoting our satin pillow cases. PS – She also shares her hair care secrets and more as the voice of instagram @SavvySleepers. More importantly, she also has amazing, creative, out-of-the-box ideas! If you’ve ever worked in a corporate office and never had your opinion or suggestions heard, don’t make that same mistake if you start your own business. Listening to other’s ideas, opinions and experience, especially if they know your industry, can be highly rewarding!

After emailing back and forth/Skyping, then make your choice. If you need help specifically now, email me (dale202@gmail.com) and I can recommend wordpress help.

5 Tips to Networking at Any Age

Savvy Spice fashion blog Dale Janee Lily LASCRIP

When I first moved to Switzerland, it was like starting kindergarten all over again and instead of burgers and Mac-N-Cheese, the cafeteria serves sausage and Schnitzel. I didn’t know anyone (except my husband) and learning German isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Meeting new people starts out, ‘Mein Name ist Dale. Ich komme aus Kalifornien, uhhh… Sprechen Sie Englisch? Ya!…Ok, whew! Can we please switch to that?’ Most people I meet speak 3+ languages; super hard ones too. Thankfully, the networking part came a little easier after years of practice in San Francisco and blogging which is the fastest way to find others that love the same interests as you.

Today, I want to share my top 5 tips for networking, with the assistance of my friend and first intern, Lily, who emailed me last Spring interested in a fashion internship. After meeting over coffee at the Nordstrom Cafe, she was a perfect fit. Not only did she do an amazing job handling marketing, social media and Bay Area events for Savvy Spice; she’s pursuing her dreams in fashion and was just accepted to Cal Poly Pomona. We snapped a few pics together last month in San Francisco meeting before she heads to So-Cal this summer. Here are my Top 5 Tips for Networking at any age and learning how to connect with others not only for meaningful professional relationships, but true friendships… [Read more…]

Interview: Cassie Chapman of TNT’s ‘Nashville Wives’

Savvy Spice Nasvhille Cassie Chapman

‘A glass of wine or champagne for you, ladies?’ the waiter asked. I can honestly say I’ve never sat down with another female and our drink of choice was Crown Royal. ‘I’m a whiskey girl,’ Cassie said unapologetically. Woohoo! my favorite, I thought, as we each ordered a bowl of split pea soup garnished with bacon and our whiskey cocktail – Crown & Seven for her, Crown & Coke for me – in Nashville’s Hutton Hotel. Cassie Chapman stars on TNT’s newest reality show, The Private Lives of Nashville Wives,’ which she admitted  turning down three times before finally signing.

Don’t let this Southern belle’s petite frame fool you though. What struck me initially, after her gorgeous blue eyes and smile, was her genuine down-to-earth demeanor mixed with a bold enough personality for a reality show. A rare combination. Cassie’s married to Gary Chapmansinger, songwriter, Christian music star and Nashville staple – after meeting in the Bahamas, falling in love, marrying and adopting their daughter, Eva Rose. There’s also a European connection. She’s part Swiss and a big fan of Switzerland! So from life on a reality show in Nashville handling cat fights, haters and humidity, to far deeper topics like the issue of private adoption- meet Cassie… [Read more…]
