In case you don’t remember the ‘huge style scandal’ of January ’09, here’s a recap. Jessica Simpson took the stage to perform at a chili cook-off in Florida in a skin-tight black tank, thick leopard-print belt and those infamous high-waisted blue denim ‘mom jeans.’ Tabloids had a field day speculating about weight gain and TMZ cruelly titled its post on the style debacle as ‘Jessica Simpson: This is How She Rolls.’ Yet nearly a decade later, all I can think is, ‘I get it Jessica. But next time go with a high-waisted skirt.’
High-waisted skirts with wrap details, ruffles and belts are more popular than ever and they offer all those comfy benefits of ‘mom jeans‘ while being in style. Club Monaco describes one of my faves, its Dilys skirt, as featuring ‘a paper-bag waist and structured A-line silhouette, creating a polished aesthetic that works with a blouse for the office or a tee on the weekend.’ Sounds good! Plus, this trend is ideal to transition into your fall wardrobe. I wore one recently to brunch with family in Dallas. Bring on the pecan sticky rolls and berry muffins…
The Scene – Brunch at one of my favorite spots in Dallas: Breadwinners on McKinney Avenue
Now Trending – If you prefer shorts in the summer over skirts, in a recent style post by my friend Yvonne of FunkyForty.com in Switzerland, she talks about the hottest shorts trends in her Ageless Style Linkup including many that are ‘higher-waisted‘ and have a ‘tied waist.’
Don’t Miss the Zara Sale – I know it’s all about the Nordstrom Anniversary sale right now on style blogs, but I bought this floral skirt at last summer’s Zara clearance sale ending soon. Check out your local store or you can shop it online here.
Flirty Colorful Footwear Alert – Harper’s Bazaar talked about ‘7 Shoe Trends to Have Fun with this Summer’ including mules, espadrilles, low block heel sandals, platforms (70s style) and any rainbow colored sandals. I found this Valentino pair in ‘greenery’ on summer clearance at Clotheshorse Anonymous in Dallas.
‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’ – High-waisted skirts sit on the smallest part of your waist and make you feel cinched in, while not being tight on your stomach or thighs which is the perfect combo for a heavy Sunday AM brunch. It’s a win-win. No beach days in sight here in Dallas.
<DETAILS by Dale> skirt (last summer) – Zara (shop a few of my faves below) / sandals – Valentino Clotheshorse Anonymous in Dallas / purse – Ferragamo / top – Zara / nails – OPI ‘Mimosas for Mr. & Mrs.’

Thanks Sam! They are definitely perfect for summer. 🙂
This is such a lovely post Dale – thank you so much for the shout out.
I bought myself a cute high waisted skirt in Paris last year – it’s denim but thinner fabric and I really love it.
You look fabulous in this skirt especially with the shirt and sweet green Espadrils.
