Summer of Love in San Francisco (Don’t Forget Your Hand Sanitizer)

‘If you’re going to San Francisco be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.‘ Toss a few bottles of Purell into your handbag while you’re at it if you’re heading to SF this summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 1967’s ‘Summer of Love! The ongoing celebration has a lot to offer visitors. If only Lysol or Mr. Clean was an official sponsor and could give the sidewalks of SF a serious scrub-down before tourists arrive to see the city.

I love San Francisco and visit a few times a year now that we live in Dallas, Texas, but to quote SF Blogger, Broke Ass Stuart, ‘we live in a place where there are nearly 10,000 homeless people and we have to walk the streets worried about stepping in human waste and needles.’ Unfortunately, it’s not an exaggeration (especially in Union Square and SOMA). While I try to avoid San Francisco with our 2-year-old these days for sanitary and safety issues (I’ll save that for another post); it’s still one of my favorite cities to explore, visit friends, and eat at amazing restaurants. Here’s a few of my SF Travel tips if you’re planning to visit this summer…

The Scene – Union Square across from Macy’s in San Francisco earlier this Spring

What to Wear in San Francisco – Summers in SF are chilly, but can warm up to the 70’s by the afternoon. A sweater or hoodie on hand is highly recommended. I chose a comfy navy blue Zara skirt, but unfortunately had to deal with the AM goosebumps…

Stick to Comfy Sneakers – SF is casual and Superga sneakers are everywhere this summer (after being spotted on Kate Middleton multiple times this year) so they’re perfect for travel and won’t cause blisters. According to my Fit Bit, I walked 11,800 steps in the low-top version before my feet started to feel a little sore. You can find Superga sneakers online for $60+ or at Target for under $30. Yay!

PSWalk Everywhere! I highly recommend walking in SF these days. It’s stress-free compared to public transportation, Lyft and Uber which can leave you stuck in traffic block after block. Avoid driving in SF so you don’t have to deal with parking tickets, $50+ overnight Valet charges at hotels, break-ins on the street, and pricey garages all over the city.

Nautical Style is Chic in SF – One of my favorite style bloggers who started in SF, Atlantic-Pacific, always inspired me to wear sporty, preppy nautical looks. This Tommy Hilfiger top reminded me of my blog’s early days including ‘Nautical Networking, ‘Smooth Sailing Shopping Tips‘ and ‘What to Wear to The America’s Cup,’ in ’13.

  1. Hey Dale! You look so cute! I love that top! Party in the back! A couple of my blog friends have gone and they love it. Heard it’s really expensive, so I was surprised to read about it’s unsanitary conditions (such a shame). It’s the hot new place!

  2. I love this nautical look, Dale! Looking fabulous! You can really never go wrong with stripes… Well, at least that’s what I’m telling myself when I keep buying them…

We live in San Jose but sadly don’t make it to the city very often…
