Pssst, wanna hear some gossip? Maybe you already know; from Hollywood to real life, some women love to gossip about the clothes other women are wearing. It comes with the territory and we’re all entitled to our own sense of style which is why there are countless fashion blogs in every niche. From movies like Mean Girls and Clueless, to the hit song – #SELFIE – there’s a critic in all of us. And it doesn’t stop after high school – unfortunately. Joan Rivers on Fashion Police is proof you can be made fun of at any age.
However, style has nothing to do with the label or price-tag. What I’ve always LOVED about fashion is finding looks-for-less that make you feel put together for the day without breaking the bank. So when my personal stylist husband spotted this Chanel-esque dress at H&M, I couldn’t resist. Here’s my top 4 tips for styling any look you’ve wanted to ‘dress up’ for Spring in San Francisco last week…
The Scene ~ One of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco – Potrero Hill – where there’s plenty of parking and beautiful views of the city.
Add a Statement Necklace ~ I have a few from Zara (all $39.99 or less) and I constantly get compliments. They’re also good quality unlike other knockoff brands.
Distract with Solid Details ~ Whenever I have a dress that I want to look more upscale, I always go with a classy pair of neutral or black heels and a solid purse. (Sorry for the handbag and heel repeats in the past few posts. I packed ultra-light to California.)
Add a ‘Power Bun’ ~ I interviewed Cassie from The Private Lives of Nashville Wives yesterday and asked her one of her beauty secrets – especially during the hot, humid summers. She said ‘throwing her hair in a bun – a power bun.’ This is truly one of the fastest hairstyles that looks dressed up for any occasion.
Instagram Sidenote ~ I know a fashion blogger instagraming flowers is overplayed, but I loved these roses. Here’s the finished and filtered Instagram.
<DETAILS by Dale> Dress (recent) ~ H&M (runs small), heels ~ Michael Kors, necklace (old) ~ Zara, purse ~ LV, sunglasses ~ Calvin Klein (recent TJ Maxx), nail polish c/o ~ LVX D’Orsy, blue bracelet ~ Cartier trinity bracelet
5. Find your Secret Shopping Location ~ After living in Europe a year and seeing more H&M’s than I care to remember, I can tell you the styles, designs and prices are different in every city across the world! This is similar to TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Zara, MANGO, Macy’s and Marshalls. Depending on the neighborhood and city; the inventory and styles in stores can vary A LOT. I found the yellow wrap dress in my previous post and this one at H&M in Santana Row in San Jose. It’s the best I’ve found in the Bay – perfect for Mother’s Day shopping this week too.
Have you noticed in your city the same chain has better clothes or brands in different locations?

Oh definitely. The best branches of high street chains (for me; I am a fairly conservative dresser) are in the more affluent parts of town. Central London H&M, Zara and Mango are too edgy for boring me, but shopping with the ladies who lunch usually does the trick! I haven’t noticed that about TK Maxx, but maybe that’s because there aren’t any where people don’t count their pennies! Funny that 😉
Your dress is gorgeous. And the power bun is definitely something I want to try! How do you make it so big and round?
adorable dress and perfect top knot! I love all your posts about Nashville, girlie:) I’m a die hard country music fan so that definitely catches my attention.
