I’m a big believer that ‘age is just a number‘ and it’s all about staying ‘young at heart.’ After all, I still get excited like a 5-year-old over a fresh pack of Sour Patch Kids and sprint to the mailbox for my fashion mags after the Swiss postman arrives. But have you ever thought to yourself, ‘I’m just too old for this?‘ Not in terms of age per se, but in energy and interest levels. This happened to me at Coachella a couple years ago. Yes, it was super-fun and the performance by Tupac’s hologram was ‘epic,’ but after 3 nights in the desert clinging to my BFF’s hand so I didn’t get lost, navigating techno tents and drinking $8 beers for dinner with a wristband arm-party up to my elbow; I was Coachella’d out!
However, I still love festival fashion. Maybe Indio, CA isn’t a future destination, but there are more chilled out music festivals in Northern California coming soon. Bottle Rock, the 3-Day food/music/wine festival, is going on this weekend in Napa. Then in August is San Francisco’s Outside Lands with a line up including Tom Petty, Tiësto and Mr. Kim Kardashian himself – Kanye West. If it wasn’t a 12 hour flight from Switzerland to San Francisco, I’d be at Bottle Rock this weekend, but in the meantime here’s my NorCal Festival Style must-haves…
Sunglasses are an Absolute Essential ~ Have you ever seen anyone out in the sun all day sipping on cocktails and forgetting sunscreen and sunnies altogether? Sunglasses are my best friend at outdoor events like these.
What is Your Festival Flair? You’ve seen the super over-the-top Coachella looks, and I love big earrings. But look for light-weight styles. The last thing you want is getting tangled up in a moshpit wearing heavy chandelier earrings.
Don’t Pack too Light ~ It might be impressive to travel through the world with all your belongings in a wristlet or fanny pack, but there’s a happy medium. I love cross body bags that are large enough to carry my chapstick, cash, ID, mini-brush, bandaids, absolute make-up essentials, gum, my phone and don’t forget the hand sanitizer! It’s a MUST for music festivals.
Easy Care Hair ~ Whether you love a messy fishtail braid or can rock flower-power beach waves, wear your hair in a style you know will work from day to night with minimal touch-ups. Trying to re-do your hair is not an option whether there’s a luxury Roto-Rooter on site or not.
Layer Strategically ~ Northern California – especially San Francisco – can go from hot to ‘Brrr I’m freezing,’ in the matter of hours as darkness falls. This sweater is perfect because it’s a cardigan, blankie and picnic matt all in one.
<DETAILS by DALE> My fave high-waisted Trendy Blendy denim shorts/La Martina Belt (old)/ Zara sweater (last seen here)/Mulberry purse (old)/earrings ~ gift (similar here)/MiH Jeans denim shirt / H&M boots, sunglasses Ray Ban (similar here), nails – au natural, location – park near Zurich, Switzerland
