Savvy Sleepers Launch Party ‘Behind the Scenes’

Last week, I hosted my official launch party for Savvy Sleepers, my luxury line of unisex satin pillow cases. The ‘Slumber Party’ event for bloggers, media and friends who helped me along the way was last Thursday at #TheVillaSFO featured on Start-Ups: Silicon Valley. All guests were encouraged to wear PJ’s.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous as the party started. I wanted everything to go smoothly and most importantly for people to show up. Thankfully, the night went better than I expected and here’s 10 party planning tips that seemed to work. Many of these I copied from star studded events this awards season and entertaining secrets I’ve learned from watching the Real Housewives…

IMG 0151

1. Treat All Guests Like VIP ~ One tip I’ve learned from Lisa Vanderpump on RHOBH is to greet guests with bubbly served by 20-something young men at the front door. I was able to do this thanks to my brother and his friends along with my favorite sparkling wine ever, Roederer Estate. They sponsored the event with magnum bottles of rosé.

2. Hire a Professional Photographer ~ It’s so important to capture pictures from the night to share, tag, add to FB, etc and Michael O’Donnell at Zat Photo is the best I’ve found in the SF Bay Area! Not only does he have pics of the event streaming online on FB while the party is going on, he can create promo videos like this.

IMG 0236

3. Collaborate with Brands that Make Sense ~ I called around to my favorite brands in the Bay Area and north Bay like Testa Vineyards to see if they were interested in sponsoring and thankfully, they wanted to. Kara’s Cupcakes was one of them and I was able to meet Stephanie (above holding a Savvy Sleepers in ‘Night Knight’) from Kara’s.

IMG 0220

4. Girls (and Guys) Just Wanna Have Fun ~ I met Jesus of Los Osuna Tequila last summer. He’s really fun, his tequila is smooth, so I was very excited when he wanted to attend and offer guests a chance to try his premium tequila. #ShotsShotsWater

IMG 0195

5. Create an Environment for Networking ~ Above my business adviser, Mick Savvy, and my good friend and founder of Ike’s Place, Ike, who’s given me invaluable business and social media strategy tips. I love going to events where I know I can meet other bloggers and brands.

535487 10151326289223602 1498732618 n 11 6. Be Careful with Themes ~ Since it was a ‘Slumber Party,’PJ’s seemed appropriate. I started getting worried people might not like it and wear regular clothes or skip the party. But it turned out the theme was easy, comfy and people seemed to love it. Before choosing a theme, ask your friends first if they’d actually wear it.

7. You May Need to Ask for Help ~ Thankfully, Hermione, and her housemates offered their beautiful home, #TheVillaSFO, overlooking the city to throw the party. Above: me, @HermioneWay and blogger, Cheryl, of Oh to Be a Muse & her hubby.

8. Don’t Forget About the Swag ~ Who doesn’t love presents? I wanted to make sure everyone who attended went home with a Savvy Sleepers satin pillow case in the color of their choice plus a special discount for InPINK jewelry.

374542 158907340932934 754879765 n

9. Give Guests a +1 ~ Going to events alone can be intimidating so I love getting the +1 option. It’s more fun to go with a friend and increases the chance of spreading the word about your party or product.

484985 10152597584225103 1309850460 n

10. How to Get Interactive ~ I had the collection for people to see and feel the pillow cases. Also, I wanted to include other female entrepreneurs like Maria of Testa Vineyards and the founders of Lotus Premium Denim so women could try on their jeans. Then I had a Gift basket give away where guests could enter by liking the ‘Savvy Sleepers’ FB fanpage and tweet @SavvySleepers during the party.

Spring Trend Alert – Tux Style

SS 021913 SpringTrendAlert TuxStyle COVER 1

Tuxedo jackets aren’t just for weddings and awkward prom nights anymore. It’s actually a spring 2013 trend mentioned by InStyle this week. And speaking of weddings, I’m back in N. California frantically hunting for a vineyard venue before the big day in less than 6 months.

I styled my sister, Jody, in this tuxedo style ensemble and wanted to share a bit more about her since she’s my maid of honor. Plus, she’s constantly featured on my blog, and finally diving into the world of social media. Jody, is the head women’s basketball coach at Mendocino College after graduating from Concordia University in Irvine, CA. Last week, she was on the @RichLieberman radio show in the Bay Area discussing her season and her friendships with Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence who were tragically murdered in the LAPD Dorner murder spree. Basketball has always been a huge part of her life…

Black & White Sidenote ~ The black and white trend is big, but adding a tuxedo style jacket with a bit of color like jewel tones and gold accessories like one of my favorite Lapis Beach cuffs is a simple way to style this.

About Jody & FiFi ~ My sister, Jody’s, basketball team this year is #1 in the Bay Valley conference and they have a huge game tomorrow at Napa Valley College. Now, she’s publishing news on the team’s Facebook fanpage. Fifi is my little verde FIAT that has been the best car ever in SF and saved me hundreds in parking tickets already. If you want to get one, I have Bay Area FiFi buying tips, just email me at

Branching Out into Social Media ~ Besides her new FB page, Jody is also tweeting faux lashes and all. Follow her @CoachSteliga

How to Wear the Tux Trend ~ It doesn’t have to be for a formal occasion and a tuxedo jacket can be worn with pants, skirts or over a dress.

<DETAILS by Dale> Blazer (old) – Forever21, top ~ H&M (last Dec.), Black pants ~ Forever21 (similar cropped ones HERE), heels- Zara, Nail polish – Sally Hansen Insta-Dri, cuff ~ Lapis Beach, Special thanks to my sister Jody

Would you wear a tuxedo style jacket to a non-formal event?

Valentine’s Day 4-Step Recovery Plan

SS 021413 ValentinesDay LastMinPrep COVER

If you’re waking up this morning feeling bummed about Valentine’s Day, you shouldn’t. Having good, bad & ‘whatever’ V-Days is part of life. Plus, it’s already over and now all the red and pink candies are 65% off. And if you’re in a relationship and the day didn’t go well because of busy schedules and floral headaches, I have a few tips to patch everything up this weekend.

Please ignore the fact that I look like an extra in an Old Navy commercial. After wearing black for a week straight in Zurich, I infused my hiking outfit with every cold-weather neon accessory in my California carry-on. Here’s 4 Tips for a weekend relationship recovery plan starting with doing something outdoorsy…

IMG 0029 21

 1. Take Advantage of  Your Local Surroundings – Past trips…In Denver, we hiked near Boulder. In SF, it’s been sunny and perfect for tennis. If you’re surrounded by snow, go skiing, snowboarding or on a simple snow hike. The other day, Jakob and I went on a hike up this mountain in Switzerland.

IMG 0042

2. Give Her R&R – If you’re a guy in a relationship and Valentine’s Day was a bust; surprise her in a few weeks with a trip to the spa, a massage or a mani-pedi appointment at her favorite salon along with a bouquet of her favorite flowers.

IMG 0041

3. The KISS Method – (Keep It Simple Stupid Sexy) I hated that phrase growing up, but it does ring true in this case. Our after-hike brunch was simple and delicious, but more importantly I’m learning some European diet-secrets here in Switzerland. They may eat a lot of cheese and chocolates, but they’re slim. Swiss diet tricks coming soon…

IMG 0046 2

4. Outdoor Romance on a Budget – The total cost of the trip once we reached the top of the mountain: 1 Wienerschnitzel for him, 1 pretzel for me, and two little train tickets down the mountain. Sidenote – The Üetliberg (also spelled Uetliberg) is the mountain we’re on in the Swiss plateau, offering a panoramic view of the entire city of Zurich.

Snow Leopard

SS 021113 SnowLeopardStyle COVER

Have you noticed that black and white fashion is canvassed across stores worldwide right now? They come in stripes, spots, geometrics, plus prints including leopard and zebra patterns While fashion week in NYC right now is all about Fall & Winter 2013, for now it’s time to dress for the present.

While the simplicity of styling black and white seems easy enough; there’s still a bit of grey area. Here’s some tricks from a snowy evening here in Zurich showing some of my favorite black & white animal prints including this Zebra bracelet below…

1. Walk on the Wild Side ~ While mixing two different species of animal prints in one is a bit of a risk, concur your fashion fears in black & white. Especially accessories. This new Zebra bracelet c/o is one of my new faves and it’s subtle enough for you to mix with any black and white pattern.

2. Tights Tone Down Winter Prints ~ If you’re wearing a black and white patterned dress or skirt, add black tights with black heels to complete the look.

3. Does an Entirely black & white outfit bore you? Feel free to add a pop of color. Some of my favorites include neon and any bright solid shades like this blue cable knit sweater on sale now at H&M.

Q. What do you call an outfit that is Black & White all over Head to Toe? A. Too Much. Mixtures of black and white patterns are splattered all over fashion mags, but too much of a good thing can look tacky. Black heels or platforms with black tights is the best way to create a sleek silhouette from the legs down.

Black & White Basics ~ Start with a statement piece in a B&W pattern and then keep the rest of the look in solids.

How to Wear Emerald for Valentine’s Day

SS 020813 DoubleDoseoOfEmeraldGreen COVER

Roses are red, violets are blue; but the bottom line is that ’emerald’ is Pantone‘s color pick of the year. Pantone describes the color as ‘Lively. Radiant. Lush. A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.’  Sounds like the perfect ambiance for a Valentine’s date?

Before I flew from Cali to Zurich last week and surprisingly got engaged, I styled my sister, Jody, for this post in two shades of green outfits perfect for a spontaneous Valentine’s date or a pre-celebration wine tasting in California. The weekend is here and green means go; so let’s get started with 5 tips to wearing emerald…

IMG 0095

1. Don’t Turn Blue over Finding the Right Shade of Green~ Rather than splurging on a whole new wardrobe, just wear pieces you already own. For example, these cropped pants my sister bought last season. They may be a closer hue to a freshly cut lawn, but it works.

IMG 0086

2. What Matches Green ~ When in doubt during the winter, turn to basic black. Black heels, handbags and blazers keep the look professional and chic for a February date.

IMG 0093

3. What Goes Best with Green, Silver or Gold? ~ While I usually turn to gold statement pieces with green, don’t shy away from silver. Try to keep the hardware (aka necklace, watch, rings) consistent in silver.

IMG 0100

Barra Winery in Redwood Valley, CA~ From coffee & casual Friday night dates, I’ve covered courtship. And spontaneous dates are always fun. Tomorrow (Feb. 9th), just 2 hours north of SF on the 101, and west of Napa’s pricy tasting fees; there is a romantic wine, spirits and chocolate event called A Taste of Redwood Valley.

IMG 0101

4. Outfit #2 – Give Green Leather a Chance ~ This faux leather skirt by H&M is another way to rock the color and more versatile than a jacket or pants.

IMG 0104

(Fashion Blogger Sidenote) ~ The next LuckyFABB conference will be in LA this April. While I’m still waiting to hear the dates, follow them on twitter here. If you’re a fashion blogger, I highly recommend going. Here’s a look my review of the last LuckyFABB conference in NYC last Sept with Rachel Zoe & LC.

IMG 00911

5. Diamonds are Forever, But Emerald is for 2013 ~ My last tip to wear emerald  is to stock up on costume jewelry. Affordable earrings, bracelets, rings, statement necklaces are a perfect affordable way to dip into the trendy color.

IMG 0106

<DETAILS by Dale> skirt ~ H&M, heels ~ Zara, Blazer ~ Express, necklace ~(old TJMAXX), Watch ~c/o Caravelle by Bullova  (from the last LuckyFABB conference), ring ~ Forever21, Special thanks to my sister Jody

Are you wearing emerald this year already? If so, did you buy it new or just wearing pieces you already had?

Cape Alert! Are they a Fashion Do or Don’t?

SS 013113 CapeAlert Time2 PlayFashionPolice COVER 1

Everyone should have at least one friend who can be 100% honest with them when it comes to style. Who is that friend for you? When I decided to debut this cape last week for a casual dinner in SF; I grabbed my clutch and was ready to go when my friend Ryan yelled, ‘WHOA! What are you wearing?’

A cape,’ I replied.

I’m not gonna lie, that is not flattering at all,‘ he said. As my sister giggled in the background, I said ‘Capes are in style, so I’m wearing it anyway.’

‘Well, you look like a tortilla,’ he said. And with that, we were out the door. Now it’s time to play fashion police. I’ll give my cape-wearing-style-tips and you decide if this winter trend is a ‘Go’ or a total ‘No’!

IMG 99521

The #1 Problem with Capes ~ They’re shapeless! ‘Suck it in,’ ‘arch your back,’ ‘stick out your butt’ my sister directed snapping these pics. None of it helped. Capes are essentially cropped Snuggies. They’re not flattering, but they’re comfy and there are ways to work around their blanket like qualities.

IMG 9947

The Cape is the Statement. Now What? ~ Keep the rest of the outfit tight. Capes cover most of your body, so you can keep the rest of your clothes as fitted as a figure skater’s costume. I recommend long sleeve knits, leather leggings, tights or skinny jeans below.

IMG 9983

Red to the Rescue ~ As the cape digs continued including ‘you look like a flying squirrel’ to I decided it was time for the red lipstick trick. Channel your inner Marilyn Monroe and wear your favorite shade of red. It’s a power play every woman should have in her makeup collection. It doesn’t need to be pricy, Try Wet & Wild.

IMG 9944

When in Doubt, Put the Attention on Your Toes ~ Whenever I need to give my outfit a boost, I reach for a pair of Zara black heels. Every season, they have new styles that are budget friendly, pretty good quality and comfortable. I always get compliments on Zara heels and in this case, they took the focus off the cape.

IMG 9957

Valentine’s Special Coming ~ Next week I’ll have posts from V-Day Style to how-to-know if you should give her red roses. There’s lots of factors.

IMG 9977

Cape (old) Nordstrom Rack (Black Michael Kors one HERE), Leggings ~ Forever21, heels ~ Zara,  ring ~ F21, Red lipstick ~ MAC

So now it’s your turn. Are capes a Fashion ‘Do’ or ‘Don’t’? You won’t hurt my feelings 😉
