What pops into your mind when I tell you to imagine the sunny beaches of California? Is it the sand between your toes, sunbathing beauties in barely-there bikinis, flip-flops and beach volleyball or perhaps David Hasselhoff running in slow motion in skimpy red swim trunks? If So-Cal beaches are on your brain, I’m about to transport you 10 hours north up the 101 to the Pacific coast of Mendocino, CA.
And if the thought of slipping into a two-piece after a slew of holiday feasts is causing some pre-New Years’ jitters, don’t worry! All we’ll need for Mendocino are some cozy essentials like skinny jeans and fuzzy sweaters. Forget your worries, pack a hoodie and let’s head to Mendocino….
Making Waves ~ This is the view from every room c/o the Little River Inn on the coast of Mendocino where I stayed just before Christmas. It’s the most relaxing getaway you can imagine. (Sidenote) For bloggers and Instagram addicts, they offer complimentary high speed wifi.
The Hamptons of Nor-Cal ~ The Little River Inn has always been my favorite location to stay in Mendocino. Why? The rooms are cozy, nautical and classy. Every cottage has an ocean view close enough to hear the waves crashing against the shore and the most beautiful view of the sunset in the evening. Check out their promotions and special winter rates here or ‘Like’ their FB fanpage.
Cottage Couture ~ The easiest way to feel stylish by the sea is to stay comfy and warm without dressing over-the-top. It’s Mendocino, not Monte Carlo after all. Pack leggings, tribal print sweaters, dark skinny jeans, wellies, cable knit sweaters, or that faux fur vest curled up in the back of your closet.
Hollywood Meets Mendocino ~ The small town of Mendocino is tourist-friendly and just a few miles from the Little River Inn. Stop at scenic spots along the ocean, breweries or go to a little restaurant called Capt’ Flints in Fort Bragg for some fresh seafood (or a grilled cheese in my case). It’s super casual, but I love it because date scenes from the classic movie Overboard starring Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell were filmed there.
‘Perfect Sunset’ Recipe ~ 1 room at the Little River Inn, 2 glasses of bubbly, add 19 Instagram filters, 25 minutes of silence, then simmer and enjoy your sunset!
Nor-Cal Roadtrip Tips ~ Whether you’re driving on Highway 1, the 101, or a narrow logging road; pack an old fashioned map because wifi fails big-time deep in the redwood forests. Also, if you get car sick on winding roads, sparkling water and Gin Gin’s Ginger Hard Candies are essential.
