A Coastal Getaway featuring Faux Fur & Real Waves

Mendocino CoastWhat pops into your mind when I tell you to imagine the sunny beaches of California? Is it the sand between your toes, sunbathing beauties in barely-there bikinis, flip-flops and beach volleyball or perhaps David Hasselhoff running in slow motion in skimpy red swim trunks? If So-Cal beaches are on your brain, I’m about to transport you 10 hours north up the 101 to the Pacific coast of Mendocino, CA.

And if the thought of slipping into a two-piece after a slew of holiday feasts is causing some pre-New Years’ jitters, don’t worry! All we’ll need for Mendocino are some cozy essentials like skinny jeans and fuzzy sweaters. Forget your worries, pack a hoodie and let’s head to Mendocino….

Making Waves ~ This is the view from every room c/o the Little River Inn on the coast of Mendocino where I stayed just before Christmas. It’s the most relaxing getaway you can imagine. (Sidenote) For bloggers and Instagram addicts, they offer complimentary high speed wifi.

The Hamptons of Nor-Cal ~ The Little River Inn has always been my favorite location to stay in Mendocino. Why? The rooms are cozy, nautical and classy. Every cottage has an ocean view close enough to hear the waves crashing against the shore and the most beautiful view of the sunset in the evening. Check out their promotions and special winter rates here or ‘Like’ their FB fanpage.

Cottage Couture ~ The easiest way to feel stylish by the sea is to stay comfy and warm without dressing over-the-top. It’s Mendocino, not Monte Carlo after all. Pack leggings, tribal print sweaters, dark skinny jeans, wellies, cable knit sweaters, or that faux fur vest curled up in the back of your closet.

Hollywood Meets Mendocino ~ The small town of Mendocino is tourist-friendly and just a few miles from the Little River Inn. Stop at scenic spots along the ocean, breweries or go to a little restaurant called Capt’ Flints in Fort Bragg for some fresh seafood (or a grilled cheese in my case). It’s super casual, but I love it because date scenes from the classic movie Overboard starring Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell were filmed there.

‘Perfect Sunset’ Recipe ~ 1 room at the Little River Inn, 2 glasses of bubbly, add 19 Instagram filters, 25 minutes of silence, then simmer and enjoy your sunset!

Nor-Cal Roadtrip Tips ~ Whether you’re driving on Highway 1, the 101, or a narrow logging road; pack an old fashioned map because wifi fails big-time deep in the redwood forests. Also, if you get car sick on winding roads, sparkling water and Gin Gin’s Ginger Hard Candies are essential.

Rainy Day Giveaway (Win a Cruciani Bracelet from Italy)

SS 122112 RainyDayGiveaway COVER1

Rain rain, go away, or at least chill out during peak holiday shopping hours. It’s a wet one in San Francisco today, but I just learned Macy’s in Union Square is open for the next 48 hours. So if you need a last minute shopping buddy at 2 am , you’ll know where to find me.

Today, I’ll share my favorite way to cheer up an outfit on a rainy day and I’m giving away a bracelet I saw women wearing all over in Europe. It’s a huge trend started in Italy that took off last summer. Enter to WIN the Cruciani fuscia bracelet below…

IMG 9904

How to Wear Wellies. Step 1: Laugh at Yourself ~ The moment I put on these pink Hunter boots with this tutu style skirt, I felt like Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura during the mental institution scene with Courtney Cox. If you feel like a 9-year-old wearing bright wellies, the key to rocking colorful rainboots is to pair them with contrasting neutral colors or nautical styles like Blair of Atlantic~Pacific does effortlessly and often.

IMG 9945

Let the Neon Sunshine In ~ While window shopping in Paris and browsing boutiques, Kate Spade and Bloomingdales, neon lime shades in clutches, scarves to accessories are everywhere! Add a bit of neon to your wardrobe now and watch it transition into Spring.

IMG 9943

Hearts & Buns ~ I found these little hot pink heart earrings at F21 last night and a ponytail teased and bobby pinned into a high bun is my go-to-rainy-day hairstyle.

IMG 9932

What Color is Your Umbrella? ~ I learned a trick a few years ago on a gloomy, rainy day in SF. If you carry a white, floral or colorful umbrella, it creates a little bright cloud above your head and just feels happier than basic black.

IMG 9939

<DETAILS by Dale> Leather jacket ~ Zara (Similar G by Guess here), boots ~ Hunter Original Rainboots (on sale here), skirt, nail polish & clutch ~ F21, scarf ~ Calvin Klein (recent TJMaxx), bracelet ~ Cruciani (Giveaway Below)

I’m wearing this authentic Cruciani bracelet and brought back 1 Extra from Europe for the winner. They have been featured on fashion blogs all over Europe and constantly worn by top fashion blogger Chiarra Ferragni of The Blonde Salad.

You will win the Cruciani bracelet in this same fuscia color & a custom Savvy Sleepers from my new line of luxury satin pillowcase in the color of your choice.

How to Sparkle on a Budget in Vegas this Winter

SS 121812 Vegas COVER

The holidays are a time for giving; not gambling. Right? While a Sin City excursion may seem like a total budget buster this month, December (excluding NYE) through February are actually some of the most affordable times to plan a Vegas vacation. In case you need a last minute 21 and over present idea. 😉

The off-season means you can get a major deal on rooms and shows, plus enjoy the nightlife without sweating your foundation off in the summer desert heat. Here’s a few tips if you want to jet-set to Vegas on a budget this winter and how to maximize the wear-ability of those sparkly dresses in your closet deemed NYE rejects…

How to Make Vegas Potion ~ Whenever I’m going on a trip I take one of the little travel containers and fill it half way with Cocoa Butter lotion, then 3 sprays of Sally Hansen leg spray, 2 dollops of shimmer lotion, and 1 squeeze of Loreal Sublime Bronze lotion. I shake it, and apply to my arms, legs & back. It’s the mix that will keep you bronzed, silky smooth and glowing all night. Plus, if you bought all these on the strip at Walgreens, you’d spend at least $50.

My New Favorite Hotel in Vegas ~ The Vdara is new, modern and stylish next to the Aria. Plus, it’s completely non-smoking and the chevron print decor is so fashion forward. Sign up for any newer hotels’ emails and follow them on twitter so you know when they’re offering specials.

Jackpot Tricks to Planning in Vegas ~ The hotels on the strip are spread out and you can spend hundreds on taxis staying in a bad location. My best advice to save yourself an initial headache is to plan your hotel and entertainment near each other. The Vdara is located in the City Center next to Marquee nightclub in the Cosmopolitan. We saw the newest Cirque du Soleil show  Zarkana c/o MGM Resorts in the Aria right next door. The quality of the acts, stage and decor in Zarkana were stunning and unique compared to every other Cirque show I’ve seen.

How to Pull an ‘All-Nighter’ ~ I recently discovered All Nighter Makeup Setting spray by Urban Decay in travel size for $12 and I love it. I lightly spray my face after my makeup is completely done. It’s hypoallergenic and claims to keep your makeup in place for 16 hours (aka 3 hours in Vegas time). The full 4 oz size is also available here.

<DETAILS by Dale> Dress (kinda recent) ~ H&M,Clutch (recent) & heels (old) ~ F21, (Sidenote) ~ Emerald Green is the HOT color for 2013.

Special Paris Edition: How to Wear White in the Winter

SS 121012 How2WearWinterWhite COVER Rain, sleet, snow, muddy puddles and every other winter weather element you can imagine aren’t exactly conducive to wearing white in December. Yet, I love the idea of an ivory dress, fluffy white sweater or a pair of snow colored skinny jeans in the heart of winter. White is crisp, clean and classy.

I was able to spend a few days in Paris on the Savvy Sleepers Euro Tour. On my last night in Paris, I wore an off white Calvin Klein dress paired under an ivory trench. Here’s my top 3 tips for wearing white including a bonus ‘dress altering’ trick that will make you the hit of the holiday party, plus I can guarantee no one else will have your Look!

1. White Fur is Best Saved for Details ~ White faux fur is fun, but if a jacket that’s entirely white fur gets the slightest bit dirty, you’ll look like road kill. This trench has a removable white faux fur collar so it’s just enough. White faux fur hats, mittens, ear muffs  or shawls are also fun.

2. How to Alter a Basic White Dress ~ I found this Calvin Klein dress at TJMaxx and it had a weird, unflattering built in cami. I cut it out for a more revealing Rhianna-ish neckline that’s appropriate for any holiday event with a few strategically placed hair extensions. I also had it altered near the hips. (Sidenote) If you spot a dress you want to alter, make sure it doesn’t have difficult seams or zippers and have your seamstress on speed dial. Don’t settle for a dress that doesn’t fit you perfectly when a $25 trip to the tailor can have you looking like a professionally styled celebrity.

The Opera House in Paris

3. The Easiest Color to Pair with Winter White is Black ~ It’s a classic winter combo that makes me feel a little bit Coco Chanel even if I’m in a 5-year-old Bebe trench. If you’re wearing a white dress, add black heels, a black handbag, clutch, a brooch or statement necklace. Black + White = Classy

<DETAILS by Dale> Trench (old) ~ Bebe (similar black & white version here), heels ~ Zara (recent), dress ~ Calvin Klein (Similar here)

Do you have a favorite ‘Winter White’ staple in your closet?

(Sidenote) Thanks for following throughout the Euro Tour and I’m announcing a GIVEAWAY this week with a fashion accessory straight from Italy that I picked up after seeing TONS of European fashionistas wearing them….Stay Tuned

Rock-N-Roll Ballerina

SS 120612 BlackSwan COVER

California has had some crazy rainstorms, flooding and intense weather related Facebook updates in the past week. While I’ve missed the stormy Cali conditions; my sister has been cooped up indoors in Nor-Cal. It’s the perfect time to have her showcase a style I call ‘Rock-N-Roll Ballerina’ in this chilly vacant dance studio.  This trend is when you take a ballerina-esque dress or skirt and pair it with an edgy jacket such as camo, leather with booties or studded heels.

My sister, Jody, is holding down the fashion fort mailing Savvy Sleepers orders and wearing looks I left for her while I’m in Europe a couple more days. Below is her style-blogger performance in ‘Rock-N-Roll Ballerina’ as she does her best to pout, rattle and roll the film...

Black Swan 2.0? ~ Yes. Try mixing girly romantic dresses with edgy rocker style jackets. Keep accessories consistent like a leather belt, clutch and leather booties. Then add a rocker or camo jacket (one of this season’s hottest looks) with a blush colored dress and tights.

2 Tricks to Ballerina Beauty ~ My sister and I never took ballet, but there are two perfectly polished ballerina attributes we attempt to copy. 1. Beautiful buns. Pull your hair into a high pony tail, tease it and create a little ball on your head holding it in place with bobby pins and hairspray. 2. Top-notch posture. I’m not saying to prance around on your tippy-toes, but we’ve all heard better posture can make us look more confident and even thinner.

My Favorite Foundation ~ If you’re going to a holiday party and want to create that flawless-looking ‘ballerina’ skin, or if you just want great coverage, my sister and I both wear MakeUp Forever Mat Velvet+ (shade #45)

Avoid Going Nude ~ Neutral heels go with any color, but it’s better to avoid nude with this style. If you’re pairing an edgy rock-n-roll style jacket with a feminine dress in the heart of winter, nude heels are just too spring & summery. Go for a studded stiletto, spiked platform or any black bootie.

<DETAILS by Daledress ~ H&M, jacket ~ Zara (similar here), ring & belt ~Forever21, Nail polish ~ Sinful Colors, clutch (old) ~ TJMaxx

Do you ever mix a girly dress with an edgy jacket? ~xoDale
