White Collar Couture Plus 5 Crucial Steps to Never ‘Pull a Britney’

If Michael Scott taught us anything about working in an office, it’s that entertaining coworkers you can laugh at make the day go by just a bit faster. If you work in a serious office building and there’s no such thing as casual Fridays; how can you have fun with your attire? The answer is to switch up one of the most basic work essentials: a white collared shirt.

Below my sister, Jody, is in a basic white dress shirt paired with grey in 2 different outfits as well as a simple step by step that will eliminate celebs and any of us from ever ‘pulling a Britney’ again. Ironed, starched, wrinkle free; how do you prefer your white collared shirts? Let’s get to work….

Bored of the Same Old Slacks? ~ Try an ankle length pair like this with a belt, 2 inch heels or less and go with a fitted blouse so it can easily be tucked into the pants.
Makeup Drama! ~ If you wear makeup and blend well so your neck is the same color as your face (that’s good!), but you may notice your white dress shirt has makeup on the collar by the end of the day which is annoying. Solution: Unbutton the top button and pop the collar which should stay away from your neck. Or wear a darker shade scarf or an edgy ascot which acts as a barrier.
Personalize your Accessories ~ This little bundle of charms adds a pop of personality and color to an otherwise black, white and grey ensemble. This necklace is by a local Northern California designer Charming Designs by Lynda who’s jewelry is worn by American Idol superstar Daughtry regularly and in his new music video.
The Pencil Dress for Fall ~ If a dress is stretchy enough or allows for layering, I love a white collared shirt underneath. It’s an easy way to stay warm and completely change the look. Pencil skirts and dresses are also a ‘must have’ for fall.
The Battle of the Bunch ~ If you’ve ever tried layering over a collared shirt, one irritating aspect is when it gets bunched up and causes bumps and lumps. Choose a dress with a thick stretchy material like this or in a pinch: Spanx it and tuck the top into the Spanx under your pencil dress. No one will know.
The Proper Exit Strategy ~ As my sister got out of the car, I realized that if she was a celebrity, this photo would be splashed across tabloids and blogs because of a paparazzi sneak attack. I’m guessing most women getting out of cars around the world in a dress or skirt have had at least 1 innocent getting-out-of-a-car-panty-flash moment which brings me to a simple, yet effective FREE defense. Please see the ‘Paparazzi Protection Plan’ below…
If Only Britney Would Have Known ~ Step 1. ~ Snap legs together like their sealed. 2. Clutches are not reliable, use your hand to create a shield 3. Swing both legs in unison outside the car door still holding your hand as a cover 4. Keep your hand steady  5. Stand up and proceed to destination. You: +1, Paparazzi: 0
