A Very Vintage 4th of July Dress

Whether your 4th of July plans involve driving to a buddy’s BBQ, relaxing in your own back yard, or flying off for a 5-day vacay; if you’re unsure what to wear, just listen to the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Beyond it’s true meaning, it’s basically a 4th of July fashion handbook from the “broad stripes” to “bright stars.” Keep whatever you’re wearing in the red, white and blue color family and you’re good to go! The patriotic couture I’m wearing below comes straight from my Aunt Marilyn’s collection of clothes from the 60’s & 70’s…

Marilyn ~ A few months ago, my cousin and I were going through a collection of my Aunt Marilyn’s clothes from when she was in her 20’s. Although sadly she passed away before I was born, she loved fashion and often sewed her own clothes which my grandma saved. My 4th of July dress that is 3 decades old from her collection still had the tag on it and I’ve featured her other amazing clothes like these retro shorts here & her vibrant 70’s jumpsuit here

4th of July Fashion in Seconds ~ Finding a dress like this incorporating red, white & blue is the easy route, but men & women can easily wear white shorts, red denim, blue and white striped tops, with boat shoes.  Women can also simply wear a solid dress, wedges and accessorize with necklaces and bracelets in red, white or blue.

Vintage Details ~ Vintage dresses often have details that modern pieces are missing. For example, the collar of this dress was huge, but there were little clasps on the back to hold them together.

Instant Vintage Glam Factors ~ Whether you’re wearing vintage or not, a few details instantly connect you to your favorite female MadMen cast member. 1. A dress that falls just below the knee paired with heels. 2. Red Lipstick 3. Red Nail Polish 4. A glitzy clutch 5. Heels (You choose the height)

Red Hot ~ Red’s Java House on Pier 30 has been around nearly 90 years as a popular burger joint for longshoreman. Now, it’s a classic spot to grab a bite to eat and although Pier 30-32 is where the new Golden State Warriors arena will be built, rest assured Red’s isn’t going anywhere.

Dress (vintage) ~ Nardis by Dallas, clutch (recent) Max New York (TJMaxx find), watch ~ Michael Kors, heels (old)~ Wild Diva, ring ~ F21

What is your idea of 4th of July fashion? Do you try to wear red, white or blue if you’re going to a BBQ or if you live outside the US, what do you wear for your country’s day of celebration?
