Tiger Hunting & Golf Fashion at the 2012 Olympic Club US Open

‘Fooorrreee!’ is one word I never heard yesterday at the US Open. Whether you play 18 holes every weekend or your golf knowledge is limited to a Caddyshack movie night; there’s no denying golf fashion is in a league of its own. Yesterday, the course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco was packed with thousands of people (about 75% men) watching the world’s greatest golf pros at the 2012 US Open.

While I can’t speak for all women, I can credit Elin Nordegen as the person who first piqued my interest in golf. Something struck me about the way she handled herself from the start of the drama in ’09 to how she kept her composure throughout Tiger’s messy string of mistress revelations. And isn’t it a little amusing how Elin bikini pics are popping up in the media this week as Tiger takes on the US Open? I’m Team Elin all the way and had to root against Woods yesterday, but back to the tournament for now.

Here’s a peak into yesterday’s first official day of the competition, plus ‘What to Wear to a Golf Tournament’….

Golf Tournaments are NOT fashion blogger friendly ~ I found out the night before the US Open security is super strict with a ban on cell phones & cameras because it can distract the golfers. Ugh, I just wanted pics of the spectator fashion. Luckily, I got mine through (TIP ~ They only scan your body with the metal detector. I tied a knot in the sleeve of my sweater, put my camera & cell in there which went in a little bucket to the side away from the detector.) I met a female golf fan, Sam, who I thought was the best dressed female yesterday in her red skinnies, fedora & prepster sweater. So we snapped a pic before the marshalls rolled by.
The Crew

I went with a group of friends bright & early around 8 am. We all made it through until 6 PM with only 1 minor case of sun stroke. (Sidenote) Guys, please wear sunscreen & stay hydrated (with H2O) if you’re going to be in the sun all day ;)

Welcome to the Olympic Club

Everyone wanted to see Tiger~ Each hole was lined with people, but whenever I saw a massive crowd and the echo of golf claps, it was usually fans following Tiger…It was really hard to take pics up close because I didn’t want to get my camera confiscated, especially for him.

The pros & their caddies

My favorite part was sitting on the hillside watching the players putt through

Rory Mcilroy warming up, but Bubba Watson was my favorite player of the day with his pink driver

Golf Spectator Fashion Do’s & Don’ts

Women ~ I did a lot of research on “What to Wear to Watch Golf” and it’s best to wear comfortable shoes or sandals because you’re walking A LOT on uneven ground. (skip heels & wedges). Purses were limited to 8″ by 8″ so I knew I needed a smaller crossbody bag that would still hold sunscreen, cash, lipgloss etc. For women, skirts, shorts or casual sundresses are preferred. As one article said, “It’s not the Kentucky Derby” so there’s no reason to go all out.
Men ~ Looking out across the crowd, it was a sea of khaki shorts & polo shirts which is what’s most common. Also, unless you’re actually golfing in the tournament, there is no need to wear golf shoes. An athletic shoe or loafer is recommended with an ironed shirt and khaki pants or shorts.
Golf Spectator Essentials ~ Hat, Sunglasses & Sunscreen. The Olympic Club was chilly at times yesterday, but these 3 essentials were a must (visors work too)

DETAILS by Dale

Light pink top (recent) ~ Banana Republic, skirt (recent) H&M, purse ~ Tyler Rodan (TJMaxx), necklace~ H&M, watch~ Michael Kors, oxford shoes ~ Bamboo, flower ring & Fedora ~ F21

Overall, it was a great day. Lots of walking, lots of sunshine, but 1 day at the US Open was enough for me. Have you ever been to a golf tournament (or been forced to watch it on TV) and if you want to share, are you ‘Team Tiger’ or ‘Team Elin?’  ;)

Have a great weekend,
xoDale

ENVYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! but you look fantastic! I found a wallet on the ground of the ferry parking lot in Larkspur on Tuesday evening that belonged to an Olympic Club member. located him quickly by calling the club itself. where are my tickets I say?!

in the spectator essentials you forgot to mention how a periscope can be very handy since everyone there is so tall. Also, shoes with decent grip because as you know, hill sides are very slippery and more so when really dry.

That’s a great outfit for the US Open, I love your hat. We went a few years ago and I totally agree with your tips and how its tough to get near Tiger. I’m Team Elin but I’ll keep that to myself as I live with a very dedicated Tiger fan. :0)

    Hi Dale,

    Team Elin…hands down.
I am taking my Dad golfing for Father’s Day…never been, and hope driving the cart provides enough entertainment since I don’t golf…This post is most beneficial since I need to dress for the weather because it’s going to be hot! Wish me luck.

Have a great weekend and thanks for sharing.

    Hugs.

That is so nice you’re taking him for Fathers Day Lola, and driving the cart is one of my favorite parts about golf so I’m sure you’ll have a great time and get a little tan too :)

    • Lola says:

Thought I would share…it rained…which means we didn’t golf. Another day, another time. I hope you had a nice weekend…as for Monday…it’s sunny and hot! Today would have been the morning for golf…oh well. Hugs.

    Hi Dale,

This is a great post! I am definitely on TEAM Elin. When they were married I would always tune in as soon as she was on with Tiger because I though they were such a cute couple with their kids (ha!) and ~of course~ she was so fashionable and attractive.

Great outfit and perfect for the days activities. Love the Fedora and BR blouse. Great idea to get the bag you did. I’ll be traveling to Europe soon and need to get something that’s similar to that.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Leslie

Dale, great report on how to get dressed to a golf tournament. My boyfriend plays on golf tournaments quite often, but never joined it as I would probably get bored :-D . A good thing he won’t read this entry hahaha ;-) . He wears khakis and polo shirts all the time when he plays. You looked cute by the way. Love your hat with the bow, super cute <3

This is such a cute post. Love your golf outfit. You look so dapper. ;) I especially love your hat.

Also, I agree with your choice for best dressed female golf spectator. Although I didn’t see the other options, I imagine it doesn’t get much better than an argyle sweater and cropped red pants. Love it!

Btw, I’m teal Elin too. She really did handle that whole fiasco with super class! ;)
