How to Solve a Denim Dilemma One Leg at a Time

When it came to math and science in school, I was pretty much dead in the H20. While subtraction may not be my strong suit, I learned that when it comes to designer denim addition, does the ‘Cost’ + ‘Brand Name’ = A Flattering Pair of Denim? No. The truth is a $200+ price-tag and designer label doesn’t always equal a great pair of jeans. Everyone has a different style, cut, and wash preference, but there are some basic denim qualities you should test drive before ever spending too much on designer jeans.

I recently discovered a denim diamond in a rough of never-ending racks of jeans called Lotus Premium Denim. This line was started by 6 young business women in Silicon Valley and launched last November. Lotus has already made a huge dent in the world of designer denim and 5% of all sales go to charity. Beyond fashion and charity events, they were exclusively invited to GBK’s Celebrity Gift Lounge for the MTV Movie Awards last month. So in the future, you may see the stars of “Pretty Little Liars,” Jennifer Love Hewitt and Taylor Armstrong splashed accross the tabloid mags wearing Lotus. I recently partnered with Lotus Premium Denim and will show you their signature designer jeans below ~

All denim was not created equally ~ Try on tons of pairs and ask your friends what styles and brands they like most. Especially for women, the most annoying aspect of desiner denim are the ones that stretch out really fast and you feel the need to constantly wash and dry them. (Tip ~ Wash dark designer jeans inside out to preserve them longer.)

You Have Your Denim, Now What ?~ The worst part of designer jeans is when they’re too tight or uncomfortable with certain tops, especially when you’re breaking in a new pair. Keeping a blazer and loose blouse on hand usually solves that problem.
Candy Toe Trend Alert ~ As I was taking Wallee (the CEO of the City Supply Co) for a walk I realized one common quality of good denim is they can go with any heel, wedge, boot or flat like these neon toe 2-inch heels at H&M last week (on sale for $20 from $59.95) I always TWEET deals I see like this when I’m out shopping. Full Disclosure: What to look for in designer denim? ~ When Elaine of Lotus Premium Denim invited me to try on a pair of their denim ($129), I knew if I didn’t like the fit, there was no way I could accept or blog about them. I tried on the first pair and they were too short. ‘Try the 30 inseam,’ she said and they were perfect! If you’ve ever had to get your jeans tailored, Lotus makes them in “28” & “30” inseams to save you time & money altering them. They run true to size and the denim is thick, but still comfy and stretchy so I could move around, sit, etc. (Some designer denim is not forgiving & some are too stretchy)

The Pocket Effect ~ The days of checking someone’s back pocket for elaborate designer brands are over. I actually try to avoid flashy branding with too much thread or labels all over the pockets, what about you? The lotus flower on the back pocket is creative & unique while not taking away from the jean. There’s a science to pocket placement. If they’re too high, it will flatten your butt. If they’re too small, butts will look bigger. Lotus specifically designed their denim to have a “sweetheart yoke” in order to create the most flattering backside. Details below~

  11. I’m obsessed with finding a good pair of jeans. I’m not sure if it’s because of the high price but I hate spending more than 50 dollars on a pair. I seriously only wear 3 jeans on a regular basis, so I need more.

    • Yea, I know what you mean Anna. It was hard for me to buy my first pair too but I’ve noticed premium denim does last longer. I’ve had one of my favorite pairs since 2006 and they’re still in really good shape. 🙂

Those jeans fit you really well! And youre right about the constant washing to “keep the fit” right. Love those shoes too! $20 is an awesome price 🙂

  20. Hi Dale,

Jeans jeans and more jeans. I have a hard time finding a pair that fit well and leaves me feeling like I wear the pants in the relationship, versus the pants wearing me…The pockets on the rear will make or break me. And I NEVER buy jeans with no pockets, it’s a fashion crime in my book. A Big no no. I can honestly say I don’t have a pair that are my staple jean…I will be sure to check out your recommended site. And I agree with you on the details on the pocket…I leave the bling or accessories for my hands, wrist, or neck, not my rear! he he

I love this post…you have the best tips.

  21. B Allen @ What2Wear says:

Thank you for this post, I haven’t bought any designer jeans in the past year because I was trying to loose my baby weight and now I’m on the hunt for some, this company seems to really know what they are doing and I will definitely check them out!

Hey Dale! I love your “fashion” math! You get an A+! HaHa I think it’s fabulous that you can design your own denim. You know how many pairs of jeans and brands we have to go through to get the right fit! This is an excellent concept. Thanks for sharing!

love this post about finding the perfect jean! Most of the time I have a hard time with the fit of my jeans and even the length because I’m so short. It’s nice to have another brand to look into 🙂

  26. TheAvenueVee says:

Finding the perfect pair of jeans is probably the biggest fashion dilemma for women, specially when you are pear or hour glass shaped. I also agree that the most expensive ticketed item is not always the best for your body type. It looks like the Lotus jeans are a great fit on you!
