5 Tips to Get Out-the-Door Looking & Feeling Good in 30 Minutes

There’s nothing worse than rolling out of bed with no idea ‘what to wear’ and no time to spare before you need to be out of the house for work, school, meetings, etc. Over the years, I’ve discovered some tricks to drastically cut down prep time for both men & women. Yes, guys can take forever too! I have one friend who makes sure every hair is in place and his V-neck is ever-so-snug stating to his fiance that he’s “High-Maintenance, High-Performance” when she urges him to ‘hurry up.’

I’ve been notoriously slow ‘getting ready’ in the past. Running down a dirt road with my shoes in one hand and a bagel in the other trying to catch my ride to high school is a memory I won’t miss. There’s a huge difference between getting out the door on time frazzled, and making it on time feeling good and put together. Here’s 5 of my “Time-Savers” that I’ll show you below on my sister  because I wasn’t ready 😉

1. Pick out your Clothes the Night Before ~ It’s not just a good routine for kids; when you have your outfit ready-to-go (including ironed, shoes picked out, accessories set) it’s one less hassle in the morning.
2. Take advantage of Spring Temps~Warm weather, especially in CA, can make getting dressed more simple. It’s a one-step process for women (just throw on a dress). Buns, pony tails & hats like fedoras are also convenient for bad hair days.

3. Quick Make-Up is Key~ Try to have your day make-up routine down to 15 minutes or less. Sunscreen, primer, foundation if needed, eyes (mascara & concealer is usually a must-have), then a bit of blush, bronzer and lipstick. Famed makeup artist Bobbi Brown offers her super fast makeup routine here(Keep a mini-makeup bag with essentials in it at work for touch ups) And guys, don’t forget the sunscreen.
4. Dress Up with Simple & Classy Work Accessories ~ I always wear a couple bracelets and a watch to the office, plus a handbag that carries everything, but one of my new favorites is this menswear inspired cuff by Bolbach I first saw on Anna on her addicting style blog, FashBoulevard

The Cuff Up Close ~ This black python cuff with gold details courtesy of Bolbach is my new favorite unique accessory because it can be worn during the day with a collared shirt or at night with a dress.

Dress ~ Jason Wu for Target, fedora ~ Forever 21, heels ~ Zara, handbag ~ vintage, cuff ~ Bolbach
Tip #5 ~ Breakfast in Bed the car, office, break room, etc.
Skipping breakfast is an instant headache by 11 am, but I have no time for it before I leave the house which is why my desk at work doubles as a pantry. Cheerios, fresh fruit, almonds, gummy bear vitamins, etc.

How do you cut down on your ‘Getting-Ready’ Time? If you have any tips or quick & tasty breakfast ideas, please share. 🙂

Thanks to my sister, Jody, for letting me dress her up in this post and I hope you had a great weekend!

Thanks for a great post! Unfortunately in the North West it is still too chilly to wear anything one piece. I am looking foward for the actual continous warm weather days!

Choosing what to wear the night before is huge for me. When your rushed in the morning it seems like you have a closet full of nothing to wear!

  4. great tips thanks! being in the health field and having to wear scrubs definitely saves me time! ha!

Great tips! For me the best thing to do is decide exactly what I am going to wear while I am applying my makeup. If I don’t do this then I end up staring at my clothes trying to figure it out and end up being late. Have a fabulous day! Stacie xo

  6. dreaming en francais says:

Great tips, totally agree with #1.. I always think about outfits in bed before I fall asleep, and it makes everything go much quicker the next morning! xo

  7. Olivia McCaskill says:

Great tips, and gorgeous styling! A lot of the time I try to plan in advance but sometimes the Wellington Weather likes to change my mind (like today I was throwing things on and off). What I can always decide upon is my hair and makeup though.

Thanks for following lovely, I’m following right back! Love this blog!

  8. HailesHeartsFashion says:

Really great idea 🙂 I doesn’t take me too long to get ready in the morning simply because I follow these steps to a certain degree. I don’t usually do too much to my hair, just blow dry my fringe and whack some hair spray in. My make-up routine takes me 10 minutes and I usually know what I want to wear. Thanks for sharing these tips and the outfit above is gorgeous! I want that dress 🙂

My hair gives me the most trouble…wash, dry, straighten and sometimes curl. Make up, definitely 15 minutes…I’m getting older! Clothes, even if I pick something out the night before, the weather in Chicago can change in a heartbeat. I am definitely the slowest person in the world to get out the door but I love your tips. Your sister looks gorgeous, love the dress and heels!

    • Thanks Blondie, and I’m sure it does make it much more difficult with the changing weather in Chicago. (I know what you mean about the hair, that’s what takes the longest for me too if I wear it down.) 🙂

  15. Your sister looks great in that dress! Fun post!

  16. very nice. :_

  17. Veronica says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE the way you put this outfit together for your sister. She looks gorgeous!

I am serioulsy going to start taking your advice when it comes to picking out your outfit and having it ready the night before. I waste to much time in the morning trying to figure out what to wear.

I also eat my breakfast when i get to work at my desk. I have Oats with banana sliced up =D yummy.

Keep the great posts coming =]

  18. Stephanie McCall says:

I swear by the night before routine. Luckily I’m pretty quick though- no lie my husband in no prima donna but I can get myself and both chicklets ready in the same amount of time it takes him to get ready! I’m a bit of an anomaly in that way ha!

  19. Fashion Lookbook says:

    Pretty dress.

  20. I definitely rock dresses a lot because it’s one piece and you’re ready to go! I keep telling myself to try and get things more organized the night before but I must enjoy the punishment in the morning!

I have got one thing down to a science and thats my breakfast (food is always priority!) carrot juice, a banana, a couple strawberries and a kiwi which half the time I don’t take the skin off, throw them all in the blender and I have my amazing breakfast for the drive to work and I get my daily veggie and fruit quota no sweat!

very nice tips! i’m always rushing too – i sometimes apply my lipstick and blush in the car during stoplights but its a really bad habit and not very safe 😮

  27. That's My Mama says:

Great tips Dale! Number 1 is the best tip ever. Theres nothing like waking up and not having to think of an outfit idea while groggy 🙂

  28. Winnie says:

I always choose my clothes the night before too. It’s so much easier and beats choosing clothes in the morning and then realising they need a good iron! Though I hate having breakfast at work, I prefer having at least 5-10mins me time where I can have my breakfast at the dining room table at home.

  29. Hi Dale,

We have the same routine…time savers for sure. Breakfast is a must, no one likes a headache! And I love food. I choose healthier items with low calories. Pre-packed almonds. Fruits. Juices/Water. Something that helps me, even though I know I do this…I set my clock ahead a few minutes…and then forget about it…this way I’m 5 minutes ahead, instead of 5 minutes behind. That and I take the time to flatten my hair at night so in the morning I spend less time…it helps.

    Great post…

    Beautiful dress!

  38. Picking out what to wear is definitely the most time-consuming part of my morning! But I still never pick out my clothes the night before, haha

  39. Giovanna says:

Cute post! Good ideas! I usually spend most of my time in the morning standing in my closet trying to figure out what to wear! lol Love that dress! So cute!

  40. Great tips! I like to go to the gym in the morning, so I always make sure my gym clothes and socks are out along with my iPod and water bottle, so all I have to do is roll out of bed, get dressed, and leave. Then after the gym, I’m usually much slower about getting ready. On important days though, I always lay out my clothes the night before.

P.S. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and for your lovely comment!! 🙂

  41. Worthington says:

I love your purse and that vintage cuff – so chic!

  42. It’s a little silly but I always lay out my clothes the night before. I love this dress on your sister.

  43. I pretty much follow the same. I carry dry fruits, almonds and apples with me all the time. I also like mineral foundations (don’t even need a mirror to put this on) and liquid eyeliner (skip eyeshadows etc). Dress or one piece outfit works better than anything that you have to match I think and neutral shoes or accessories work well. Btw, I tagged you with 11 questions. Check my blog for more details 🙂

    • Mineral foundations are really nice, I need to try those more often and I totally agree with you about liquid eyeliner. I use it everyday. Thanks so much for the tag too!!

All great tips and much needed because unfortunately most of us don’t have the luxury of spending hours getting ready and out the door in the a.m. I also recommend having a good selection of simple but chic basics that can be easily mixed and matched…then just add a statement accessory and you’re good… helps a lot!

  54. Fashionable Rose says:

thank you for sharing your tips with us 🙂 x

  55. Megan Joy says:

I cut down on my ‘getting-ready’ time by not spending forever in the shower, which is very easy to do.

I love that dress! I’m loving that High-end designers have started making clothes for Target… I know it’s not exactly what they make in their stores, but it’s a little taste!
