Would you Let your Daughter Submit a Snooki Inspired Yearbook Photo?

Have you heard of Sydney Spies, the high school senior in Durango, Colorado who submitted this pic below as her official yearbook photo? The yearbook officials (a team of studentsrejected it because it was too ”inappropriate” and “unprofessional.” Each senior was asked to enter a photo that best described their personality and aspirations, which is modeling for Sydney. After this high school drama blew up in the media this week, she’s had so many Facebook friend requests inundating her account that she had to create a “Fan Page.” How tragic for her. ;)

It’s turned into quite the hot topic. What I find offensive about this photo isn’t the amount of skin she’s showing, it’s how she’s showing it. If she was a cheerleader wearing her uniform, or on the swim team in a bathing suit as her main photo, I woudn’t have a problem. While I don’t want to sound like a ”Mean Girl” and we all go through different styles in high school, her oufit in this photo is simply trashy.

When I first glanced at this photo I was shocked. I actually thought she was topless and
the black shawl was a censor bar. The bottom line is a shawl is not a shirt.
This was the 2nd photo (also rejected) she submitted. It reminds me of a girl in a club Pauly D
would take home and then send away shoe-less in a cab at 4 am. She can do better.
Every parent has different standards of what’s appropriate for how their teen daughter should dress, and I think it’s sad her mom is supporting these photo submissions. Sydney could still submit a pretty modeling photo, but in a tasteful fashionable outfit.
Remember in Clueless when Cher’s dad bluntly tells her to go upstairs and change out of her white Calvin Klein dress? Sure, Cher simply adds on a see-through jacket. But if you had a daughter dressing like Sydney and submitting photos online and to her school yearbook, how would handle the situation?
Have a great weekend, see you Monday!

I saw this on the Today Show. I think that if she really wants to submit a photo portraying her aspirations in modeling she should model in more clothes. She could look just as “sexy” and model-esq in a high school appropriate outfit.

  2. Hi! I just start this amazing blog that is gonna change your life!! Well, jaja maybe not, but surely you like it:

No, I have not heard of Sydney Spies but I am quite similar with Savvy Spice! hehe….Sydney should have hired a professional fashion stylist to help her with her outfit before she try to submit those pictures for the yearbook. Where are you Savvy Spies when girls like Sydney needed help! So sad……:(

  4. A model takes endless amounts of pictures in endless amounts of clothing. If the school asks you to be a little more modest, I’m sure you can find something along those lines in your portfolio.

I think Sydney was trying to be immortalized as ‘the hot chick’ of her class, so people seek her out during reunions.

Yearbooks are not for publicity… they’re for memories 10/20/30 years in the future, and beyond.

  5. Johanna says:

If she’d do that in a school appropriate clothes, she’d totally be that pretty model girl to everyone, but like that… Poor thing. She is beautiful, but taking pictures like that, she can never properly show it :(

    Thanks for sharing, though. xoxo

  6. Simply tasteless photos, I don’t even see a model there… so sorry for this poor girl. She obviously is trying way too hard.
Anyways, thank you for your kindness, and thank you for your kind follow. However, I don’t see you in my followers, but I guess the system is just acting strange… :)
    Good luck!

  7. While both outfits are definitely inappropriate for a high school yearbook, it’s also the posing that is inappropriate. If she is aspiring to model, then a good model knows how to pose without the hooch factor. Such a shame…she is very pretty but will probably only get calls for XXX….

  8. Thats a difficult question to say!But she is such a beautiful girl :) )) I like your blog a lot so I’m following you.
It would be great if you could follow me back :)
    Have a great weekend!

  9. Pip says:

Well, sadly this will probably land her in Playboy in the future! This is sad, and if she was doing this because she is a model or aspiring to be one, she should’ve chosen more fashionable outfits, as these are clearly slutty. The posing is so Playboy-ish as well. Oh well, this is not that shocking to me considering who our teenager’s role models are on television these days! xx

On the one hand, she’s quite passionate about her future career, on the other hand…

  12. Jacquelyn says:

Wow I can’t believe this is real! I don’t understand how girls can dress like that without feeling inappropriate, especially for a school photo. I really hope that when I have kids in the future I’ll know how to raise them well.

  13. Jessica says:

No these are def not fashion photos. But maybe she will get discovered by someone and able to learn a thing or two…but I hope she learns some class first.

  14. Chyrel Gomez says:

Very trashy and she looked like a porn star. So sad to hear about these girls. They should have better role models. Not fashion photos at all.

  15. Wow I must be living under a rock because I didn’t hear about this! Those photos are definitely too much for a school yearbook. I think they made the right choice. She seems to have such a pretty face so she could have just submitted a headshot instead. Most modeling agencies will require a headshot and a full body, so a headshot would have gotten her “I want to model after high school” message across just fine.

    Xox Lara of http://weheartbeaufy.com

  16. I hadn’t heard about this until now either. My mother would have killed me if I attempted something like this. I get it, she’s gorgeous, she’s a model, she should enjoy her body – but time and place. I don’t mind the skin she’s showing either, but there’s so much sexuality in the picture. Not entirely appropriate for a school year book (well not the ones I’ve come across anyway!)

  17. No. Sorry. I have a daughter and my husband and I would be crushed if she dressed like this. Plus, girls in yearbooks are teenagers. Snooki is well in her 20′s. She is more mature.

  18. Chanel Tonè says:

You are absolutely right. I couldn’t agree with you more. There is no need to display yourself especially your body in that fashion. It is completely inappropriate and unprofessional but it ended up being awarded with thousands of facebook fans. Miss the good ol’ days of modesty.

  19. Chanel Tonè says:

I heard about this on the news and read up on it when it came out. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  23. Lisa says:

the sad thing is she’s actually a cute girl.. is she trying to be a legit model or a import model?? hahahahaha.. just saying :p

  24. I’m really not surprised at all that these photos were rejected; of course a school cannot publish images of a pupil like this! And I agree – shawl does not equal a top!

  25. Diane says:

    Hi,
Great post. I heard about this and saw it on tv and my first thought was, what’s wrong with people? People meaning her mother. I am glad her peers rejected it. I mean, really, this is without a doubt inappropriate. You could do an elegant photo to show off your modeling skills. When did trash get mixed up with being stylish?
    Diane

  26. MrsLord says:

You are absolutely correct. The only word to describe this situation (and her outfits) is trashy. The funny thing about this is – if you go to her facebook page (or one of the other “fan” created pages) MEN EVERYWHERE are totally OK with her photos! I think that most women, especially mothers, are on your side 100%

    Thanks for sharing!

I agree this is trashy! LOL at the Pauly D girl reference!
Jersey Shore is such a guilty pleasure.

  30. So totally agree. I hadn’t thought as the black as looking like a censor band but your totally right … it DOES! Definitely NOT what I’d want my daughter to be remembered for in the yearbook. Classiness speaks VOLUMES over trashiness! Thanks for stopping by Ooh La Frou Frou, Dale, and leaving your sweet note! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend ;)

  31. In all fairness, shes a beautiful girl! She could go far with modelling and I guess thats how she wanted people in her school to remember her. Although she should have toned it down for the yearbook – maybe a more covered up less sexy shoot.

  32. LC says:

I saw this on an online news site, although SHE may think she looks good (this is why shes a GIRL, not woman. also, this is why she’s still in high school mentality) this is something that should not be published in her high school yearbook. It’s inappropriate for her age. I never followed up on the story, but it was her peers that deemed it not suitable for their yearbook, so hats off to them!!

  33. Marissa says:

she could be a playboy model…but that’s about it. she is a pretty girl, but these photos are a little to much for a high school yearbook. very interesting type.

**thanks for following :) . doing the same.

  34. Gina says:

I am a yearbook editor, and I would never want to be put in that position to reject a photo. But the yearbook students at the school did the right thing. This is very inappropriate, and should never be in a yearbook.

I didn’t know the story about her mom, and that’s unbelievable and sad, too. I agree!

  36. Angelina S. says:

I absolutely agree with you. These photos are trashy and remind to me of playboy.

  37. Haylee says:

These are such trashy photos, there are millions of ways to look sexy without looking completely trashy. I’d never let my daughter (imaginary daughter i guess lol) take and especially SUBMIT them to a high school year book.

  38. Lo says:

Terrible. She would look so nice with natural make-up, cute knit, and a portrait style photo. Shame!

    http://iyf-x.blogspot.com/

  39. I too, was dismayed when I saw the pictures. These are not age appropriate photographs to be placed into a yearbook. I’m disappointed because obviously she does not know any better, and her mother doesn’t know any better either, so they most likely do not even realize how embarrasing this very publicized situation is to how they are portrayed in the media. Unfortunately, the result will most likely be that she will have this plague her for the rest of her life, not open doors, and will not give her positive rewards in the future. Possibly rewards…but not positive ones. Very, very sad. :(

  40. Ebeth says:

Yikes. I actually read about this. And while it sucks that she got these shots and now has to pay to take new ones… It’s a yearbook. It’s a keepsake. Although let’s be honest, everyone might just remember her for this anyway. How do you think she’ll come back from this? With a slightly more conservative set of photos, or completely conservative? I feel like if I were her my next batch would be turtlenecks and floor-length wool skirts… Praying haha.

    http://houseofguise.blogspot.com

  41. melindaaa says:

wowww thats pretty ridiculous. in my high school, we only had headshots for yearbook photos, so that girls yearbook team should have just cut out her body and just used her head! that wouldve shown her!

  42. pinkmate says:

Oh gosh, too bad for her, it would’ve been better if she’d worn a cute cheerleader outfit! For our yearbook, we only had headshots as well. The rest were like candid shots of activities during school year;)
Oh don’t you think she would want to be talked about to get popular? Just a thought :)

  55. blue roses says:

i think she needs some perspective….. in 30 years, when she and her classmates look back at these photographs, how does she want to be remembered and perceived? regardless of whether they are a true portrayal of her personality, her academic achievements, her civic behavior, those photographs look cheap, and she will be memorialized in that way. if she is fine with that, i suppose it is alright.

that being said, belly button flaunting does seem inappropriate for a high school yearbook, and i am not surprised by administration choices.

  57. I totally agree with the school officials of rejecting her photos to be published in a yearbook. Totally inappropriate. She can do whatever modelling pics outside school. When the parents think there is nothing wrong with that, that’s what makes kids so ” free” these days to do and say whatever that comes to their mind(working at school part-time really open my eyes and ears).

  61. If I was her mom I wouldn’t like this at all. It’s sad to see women stoop to this level. There’s sexy and then there’s trashy. She’s in HS? She looks older! This doesn’t send out a good vibe and attracts especially the wrong men and people to her.

Great post! I totally agree with everyone, the photo is not yearbook material. Altho after reading the article, I also think the yearbook committee shouldn’t have offered to put the pic in as an ad.
