Reading Rainbow

Have you ever had one of those moments in life when you realize something your mom or dad warned you about as a kid turned out to be true? But instead of just admitting they were right to hear, "I told you so," you keep it to yourself. I had one of those moments the other day.

As a kid and teen, my dad would come home to find me watching shows like Baywatch, Days of Our Lives, and the Real World. He'd say to my siblings and I, "turn off this garbage and go read a book," which we never did. "Fine, one day you'll see how many more books people have read compared to you," he'd respond, before calling us "simpletons" and heading outside to do yardwork. While the tactic didn't get us to read more, we continued watching our shows and he saved us from ever having to hire a landscaper to maintain our 3 acres. Apparently, raking leaves and pulling weeds can be quite relaxing.

But a few weeks ago I realized he was RIGHT and there are tons of books, especially classics, I should have read a decade ago. This post is a combo of self-realization and fashion in my rainbow colored zig-zag sweater dress.

Ch. 1- The Beginning...

This Missoni for Target design (which people either loved or hated) is actually from the kids section because the women's dresses were gone in less than 30 seconds on that crazy day. So I bought this hoping it wouldn't be too short.

This sweater dress was a little boxy, so I paired it over a white collared shirt (Express) and brown tights. When a dress is too short, add tights. (Brown tights from TJ Maxx)

Little gold feather necklace I found at Forever 21

Bright purses work for fall too. This is one of my favorites I just got at TJ Maxx (Olivia+Joy)
Ring & Bracelets (F21) Nail Polish (Slick Slate by Sally Hansen Insta-Dri)

One winter trick to lengthen and warm legs is to wear heels the same color as tights. Chocolate suede heels from my $10 and under shoe place in So-Cal called Footsies Shoe Warehouse.

I used the same natural makeup routine I did on my sister in the last post, but I added a bronze Cargo eye shimmer & lined my eyes in a gel MAC eyeliner (Dipdown)

The changing Fall leaves in this N. California vineyard-photos by Thomas

This was the book I picked up that made me realize I need to start reading more. So I'm starting with John Steinbeck's East of Eden. I'm on page 7 so far...

The End.

School may be out forever in my case and I still watch "garbage" like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but on my little road to self-discovery, I plan to read 1 book a month for the rest of my life. I'll read these the old fashioned way, since I don't have a Kindle yet. On the top of the list is Catcher in the Rye, Catch-22, Gone with the Wind and maybe even Moby Dick. Plus, I have to catch up on newer novels like The Help and....

As I choose novels for my personal book club, do you have any recommendations? What's your favorite book?

xoDale

I agree that people should read more. I personally have always loved to read, so I have read a fair share of the classics. I could read more though.

  9. The dress looks great on you ( I still go to the kids section once in a while)

I read a lot more since getting my kindle. Classic books are free since they are our is copyright. I liked the millennium series "girl with a dragon tattoo" and I love the bronte sisters too. There are so many great classics that it can be hard to list (Tolstoy and Arthur Conan Doyle come to mind too!)

  12. Very clever shopping from the girl's section. I have done that before as well. XL seems to fit OK.
The dress looks amazing on you.
I love the classics. I read them all in my adult life as well since I didn't do the undergrad eduction here I was never required to read them but enjoyed them immensely. I still have a few more in my list but hard to finish books when you have kids and blogging!

  14. WOw, you look so cute in that dress! I wish I did that too since the collection ran a little BIG!

Catcher in the rye is good, I read it in like 2 days while I was on long car rides last summer. Right now I started reading Hunger Games it is pretty good!

  15. I'm the exact opposite of you, when I was a child my parents would get mad at me since I would ignore my bed time and read under my bed with a flashlight! Which is why I currently wear glasses.
Some classics I would definitely recommend are The Little Prince (Saint-Exupery), Doctor Faustus (Mann), War and Peace (Tolstoy), Jane Austen, Alice in Wonderland, and anything by Dickens or Poe. More contemporary works I would recommend are Norwegian Wood (Murakami), Vonnegut (only if you are interested in Historical fiction with a dab of aliens, for lack of a better description), and any novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.
Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting! I'm following now, follow back if you'd like :)

  16. Ouch... Maggie pretty much wrote my side of the story too. I read and read and read... and trust me... it makes no one better. I work as a writer with a television channel, AND (drumbeats please), I don't have a television at my place. So, i am all left out whenever people discuss TV shows. So I believe whether you read or watch TV, it's about how you choose to connect with the world.

Love the sweater dress, and envy you for fitting into stuff from children section.

  24. Your rainbow zigzag dress is lovely! Fits you well.

I think we have different taste when it comes to books, judging from your picks, so I wont't recommend. hehe. I read mostly financial books and self help books. I think you like classics, yes?

I dropped watching TV since I don't know, maybe 2 years ago. I still watch occasionally, of course, but just to watch the news. It wastes a lot my time once I start watching TV series. I get addicted and it's the end of my productivity.

  31. Anything by Jane Austen (Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Emma etc). Also, anything by Shakespeare (my faves are Midsummer Night's Dream, Taming of the Shrew and Romeo & Juliet)

Other classics I've read & recommend:
    Lord of the Flies
    The Scarlet Letter
    To Kill a Mockingbird
    The Secret Garden
    Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
    The Count of Monte Cristo
    The Importance of Being Earnest
    The Turn of the Screw

Some of the above are short stories/novellas so they're fast reads!! Only thing that is tricky is the language.

LOVE the dress...I could prob never pull it off but you sure did!

  32. You've just encouraged me that I really need to read more. It's so easy to get caught up in everything else that I forget how much I really enjoy reading! Thanks for that.

  63. Love your outfit! This post is kind of funny to me because I was an English major is college and I never read the books you mentioned. Oh except for Moby Dick...that one I did suffer through. :-) I do love to read but right now I read anything easy that is simply to take my mind off of the day. Fun books that are non-thinking books. :-) The Help is on my list and I actually have it at home - I just need to start it. A book a month is a great idea. Maybe you could start a book club with your girlfriends. My friend out in San Diego does that and they all actually read the books (well most of the time they do) and of course have lots of wine and girl talk. Each girl gets to pick a book too so in the last few years they have read everything from Twilight to The Help to some Jane Austen.

  64. So funny that you're reading East of Eden, it's my favourite book ever and my entire life philosophy is based off of a Hebrew word they use in there, timshel. I won't give it away but let me know when you get to it! The ultimate book in free will and the power of good.

As you can see, I'm a huge lit geek haha. I never had a problem with reading classics, if anything it was kind of negative because I turned into a huge dork. Good for you for starting now though, let me know if you need any recommendations!

And as for this outfit...perfection! I would have never guessed that dress was a kid's section find. Beautiful! Loving your blog :) Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog, I'm adding you into my link love list!

  77. Hi Dale :D

I looove your outfit! It gives off a vintage feel, like so 70's! :D
I love the Missoni sweater dress, it's really the only clothing piece I liked from the whole Missoni for target collection. O.o
And I love how you wore a white collared blouse underneath the sweater dress, it gives it a school girl look. :D So cute and pretty!
Love your bag, heels, and you have nice eyes. :)

My english teacher, actually got me BACK INTO reading old literture books!
I read 6 books fall 2011, and my fav book I read was...FRANKENSTEIN!! Such a creative story and SO DIFFERENT than the movies and how
hollywood makes the creature as some people may call, the "monster" made him out to be. It's actually a sad story :(
But I also fell in love with a poet, Walt Whitman, SUCH A WONDERFUL MAN! If you are interested in reading some of his works, read, Song of Myself, and
Leaves of Grass. Oh, and another GREAT old literture book is WUTHERING HEIGHTS by Emily Bronte! :D It's a intense passionate, sad, romance novel.
It has been made into a film several times, though I haven't seen any.

Oh and thank you for your comment on my art/craft post!

    HAPPPY NEW YR!!! :D
