My Sister’s Surprise NYE Look from Natural MakeUp to Super Glam

Uh, this looks a little hooker-ish?!” my sister exclaimed as she glanced at her face in the mirror. If only I had a $1 for every time I heard that line after I’ve done a female friend or family member’s makeup. While it may seem dramatic, my view on “going out” makeup is go Bold or go Home, but I know not every woman feels that way. Smokey eyes, liquid eyeliner, lipstick, fake lashes, foundation, shimmer and blush are all acceptable for added glamour on a big night. The key is applying it correctly and making yourself comfortable with a NEW look.A few weeks ago Salon Perfect Lashes sent me a variety box full of different lashes. I couldn’t wait to try them on my sister, Jody, who is the women’s basketball coach at a junior college in N. California. She’s in sporty attire at least 40% of her day coaching and calling shots which is when I jokingly refer to her as Sue Sylvestor.

But in the following pics, I’ll take her from no-makeup (photos not shown) to ‘Susie Homemaker’ in a natural look to Super Glam Jody. I will show you 2 different looks I did for my sister below with the exact steps and products I used that work for parties, events or a New Year’s celebration…First, Natural…

I did Jody’s makeup here as natural as possible. After washing her face and moisturizing. I applied:
First- Rimmel Foundation Primer (Fix & Perfect 001)
Prepped eyelids with MAC paint pot (Soft Ocre)
Temptu-Airbrush Makeup using the foundation and blending with a brush (Natural)
Cargo & Laura Mercier concealer/ Light bronzer NARS (Laguna)
MakeUp Forever All Over High Definition powder
Prestige Liquid Eyeliner (drugstore brand in black/brown)
MAC eyeshadows- All over lid (Ricepaper), In crease (Espresso)
Highlight upper eyelid in NARS (Albatross)
Mascara- Loreal Voluminous with MAC pigment in gold/bronze color the corner of eyes
Lips- Lined with MAC (Subculture) Lipstick - MAC (Creme D Nude)

Whew, that’s a lot for a natural look, but let’s move on to her
NEW YEAR’S MAKEUP

These are 4 of my favorite Salon Perfect Lashes styles all under $3 at Walmart. Another great drugstore brand is Ardell which are less than $6. A good starter length if you’re not used to these is #53.

The Demi Wispies are my fave for going out. They are natural looking so I added these to Jody’s eyes.

How to Create a Smokey Eye
I added a MAC charcoal colored eye shadow lightly almost all over her eye
MAC eyeshadow in (Carbon) is the best black shadow I’ve found, I used in creases and blended
Then I added MAC pigment to create a shimmer from the inner corner of her eye toward the middle
Lashes -She already had mascara on so I had her close her eyes and applied the lashes for her fast.
(Dip in glue and hold on the eye for about 10 seconds)
*She didn’t want her eyebrows touched despite my insisting ;)

To get the bottom lash line can be tricky. The best liner hands down is MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Gel Dipdown is It doesn’t smudge and will stay all night rather than a liquid liner. Appy with fine eyeliner brush.

You can also use black, but I lined Jody’s with dark brown MAC Fluidline Eyeliner.

So, Let’s See the Final Look in 3, 2, 1…

I lined her lips in a darker shade by Urban Decay and added MAC lipstick (Angel)
Added Faux Fur Shawl (Michael Kors)
Necklace (random) ring (F21)
I used my favorite bronzer/blush combo on her by NARS (Laguna/Orgasm)

Temptu Airbrush System to apply her foundation:
(Sidenote) If you’ve ever wondered about the Temptu Airbrush System that I used to apply Jody’s foundation. I bought Temptu at Sephora 2 years ago, it works and looks pretty flawless as long as it’s applied evenly. It took me practice and I still use a brush often to blend after I’ve applied it to save time.

It’s good for going out, but not every day makeup. I noticed the formula lasts much longer than other foundations I’ve used so it will stay on throughout the evening. It’s pricey at $225 (Not including the makeup) so it might be a good one to add to your holiday list. :)  It happened to be featured today Giuliana Rancic’s newsletter FabFitFun

As the finishing step, I added a bit of glow on her cheeks using a highlighter by MAC (Shell)
Then I applied a little Makeup Forever High Definition all over powder

Special Thanks to my sister Jody & Photographer Thomas

Coming soon: ’What to Wear’ on New Years Eve?
Hint: It’s under her faux fur jacket

Do you prefer heavy dramatic Kardashian-esque makeup or a more natural look when you go out at night? ~xoDale

She loooks fabulousss! Love it! And i know exacccctly what you mean! it drives me nuts!! every single time i do a family members makeup, they think they look like a drag queen. JUST cuz theyr so used to their simple makeup routine with a more neutral pallet. I agree, i think anytime you try something new, its a bit scary at first glance, cuz your just not used to it..
and i cant believe vip for that party, incuuuuding drinks is ONLY $100!!! Im deff gonna keep that in mind when im making plans for this year!!

    xoxo Inna :)

  40. kori says:

This is so funny! It can be a shock looking in the mirror after having someone do your makeup if you’re not used to wearing much. I know I’ve felt like that before. :) I’ve had a growing curiosity with false eyelashes…now I think I should try them!

p.s. thanks for saying hi over on my blog!

  41. iris says:

Natural makeup, if any at all :) Being a computer science grad student, makeup is not really a necessity nor do I find too much joy in it. That, and one really doesn’t need to be exponentially more made up than one’s friends. Then it’s just awkward :)

  42. I love heavy makeup like this. Not everyday but when the occasion begs for it. And putting it on is the funnest part!
Thx for stopping by my blog. I am definitely going to start following now on bloglovin and here.. would love a follow back doll :) :)
BTW, the H&M story is the best story I’ve hear in a while… what a lucky encounter :)
