High-Maintenance Camping 101 & 7 Tips to Survive the Wilderness

If I told you I didn't wear makeup camping, I'd be lying. I tone it down to mascara, bronzer and tinted moisturizer, but I grew up with a dad who'd choose a forest over the Four Seasons any day as our family's annual vacation destination. SO, I HAD to learn how to be a happy camper.

Last week, my family drove up to our favorite crowd-free camping spot: Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California for 3 days in the wilderness. Are you a trooper when it comes to roughing it in the great outdoors? If not, there may come a day when you're invited to go on a camping trip with friends or with your significant other.

My parent's minivan is my makeup vanity. No blowdryers so I rely on my mom's french braid skills :)

Here's my TOP 7 TIPS for surviving and enjoying a camping trip:
The initial STEP is ACCEPTANCE. You need to accept you're going to get dirty! You're going to get your blood sucked by mosquitos and you're going to miss your favorite daily amenities (like showers).

#1  Forget about Fashion
My Campin' Fashion: Old jeans, imitation Uggs and sweatshirts (any clothes you don't care about)

#2  Always take an expert camper
Take someone (in our case, it's my dad) who has tons of camping gear and experience. My youngest
brother came in handy navigating the trails in all the unexpected snow.

#3 Who needs a 4-star restaurant?
After hiking all day, camping meals taste SO delicious. We had taco Tuesday and Italian this night. Yum!

#4  Learn to make the best of your surroundings
The patches of snow around our campsite really came in handy keeping our beverages cold

#5 Your tent is your new home, make it comfy

Bring lots of reading material, a deck of cards and ghost stories to tell around the fire

#6 Find an outdoorsy talent to impress your fellow campers
I haven't found mine yet, but my sister is an expert S'MORE maker. She searches for a good stick,
breaks the marshmellow in half (like a hot dog bun) puts the chocolate in the middle, stabs it on the
stick and roasts it. It melts perfectly together before it goes on the graham cracker.

#7  Relax and Enjoy the Fresh Air
More snow than we'd ever seen there before in the summer. It was 80 degrees with my siblings above

I was actually really scared right here so I got a running start. If I slipped, I was going into an icy cold lake. Luckily, I fell after I made it over the snow. :)

Hiking with the fam

Unlike many National Parks, there are no crowds in Lassen if you're looking for some peace and quiet

My brothers ready to head home

This lake on the drive out had me craving a 7-Eleven Blue Rasberry Slurpee

So, are you a camper (high-maintenance) or expert and if so, where is your favorite place to camp?

Hope you had a great weekend!

  5. I just went camping this weekend too, and I totally agree w/ your rules :) I am pretty good at roughing it, but I do like to put on a little mascara, concealer, and a little dab of Benefit Posietint on my cheeks and lips!

  6. Loved this post. Great pics! I am not a camper, but I would do it. I use to be a Girl Scout so did some camping back in the day.
    I can deal w/o make up but I couldn't do w/o moisturizer w/ SPF.
Looks like good times! The food looked delish!

  11. Is there really snow up there now? I went up to Tahoe in early June and some of the roofline were full of snow. These are great images all around. Love the free-spirited nature of camping . . .

  12. Hahah this post cracked me up because I am by no means a camper! It's not the lack of fashion or makeup (mascara and moisturizer is usually all I wear normally) but it's the bugs and the whole being one with nature attitude I can't stand. Good for you for roughing it and still looking cute!

  14. Your lake time outfit is sooo cute! AND HELLO! I finally figured out how to fix my comment issue. I had to clear my cash and then uncheck the "keep my logged in" box when I sign into blogger. Anyway, just wait for a post I'm doing this week about doing your hair on the go! You're gonna die!

  15. I can definitely camp if I am doing it like this! My goal next time I go camping is to have meals that look as spectacular as that!

great post, these pics are awesome & I love the tips!
I haven't been camping since I've been into makeup but we used to go all the time & I didn't worry about bringing anything back then. But we did have a shower & one time we washed & blow dried our hair out in the bush!!
Camping here (aus) is so different to there, here we have red dirt & bushes & beaches, & definitely no snow!!

  23. You make camper look like fun!! :-) ...But I know the REAL story!! Ha! Ha! UGH! I have not had good camping experiences! I've gone a few times in my life. Never liked it...except for the people I was with. They were tons of fun! ^_^ Being freezing cold in the morning, having dew and wet slugs all over the inside of the tent in the morning, critters in the woods, snakes in the lake, a nearby public pool...with a shower room...and a locked gate :-( , canned beans...and only a spork to eat with (half spoon/half fork), and last but not least...mosquitoes the size of Rhode Island!! Nope! Never had a good experience! But I'm so glad you did!...You can have it!!! ^_^

  29. Amazing photos! Looks like a great family trip. I was just looking at a local camp park, but think I would want to get one of those fancy tents that have real beds and access to a bathroom! I don't know if I'm brave enough to do full on camping!

    ReplyDelete
  30. @ PoetessWug haha...you're right about a lot of that and I was miserable waking up in the middle of the night freezing cold
@The.Red.See -Totally agree, I want to get a fancier tent next time too
@Chick Flick Journal -oh yea, we have to put the food in our cars or locked up at night or Bears could come. The rangers even give you a fine if you don't put your food away. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. this post is so cute and your tent looks so cozy! i'd definitely be a high maintenance camper. i've been camping a couple of times, but i wouldn't necessarily consider it to be "real" camping. i slept in a camper and you can bet i brought all of my makeup. i'd like to think that i could make it through a relaxing camping adventure, care-free and bare-faced..but i'm not so sure, haha. the food and s'mores look delicious!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow! The lake at the very end is so so so cool! I love camping but I haven't gone in forever. The best place I've gone camping was in Grand Canyon. The stars are so big and there are so many of them it feels like the sky is going to collapse. It really is magical. And I agree that meals taste infinitely better when going camping! Glad you had fun.

  38. What an awesome trip!! I grew up with a family campervan for weekends around the UK so I am quite accustomed to doing my makeup in the rearview mirror too!!! You don't have to be completely 'au naturel' to have a good time eh! ;)

  46. You camping photos are awesome! Looked like you had so much fun (they have actually tempted me to retry camping!) I am NOT a happy camper! I am always the unfortunate one who gets stuck with a leaky tent and a snoring family member!

  47. I used to go camping nearly 2 weekends out of the month when I was younger. I loved making smores, exploring the woods, and getting dirty riding ATV's. Oh how I miss that!

  49. you look seriously cute for being a camper with just mascara and bronzer! I would never survive in the wilderness, I'm too prissy. I could go the 3 days without makeup but i'm afraid of dirt, cold, water, nature and animals! LOL But maybe it would all be worth doing for me if I had a plate of that yummy food you have pictured, and chased it down with some s'mores!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. What an awesome post!! Love that you wore makeup and that you took champagne on your trip! I like your style!! :-) I've never been camping but if I lived near that kind of beauty I'd need to rethink that!

  64. I pretty much live by those rules. I don't have an expert outdoor talent unless you count being able to consistently pee in the dark without getting it on my pajammies. :) I, too, am a make-up wearing camper, though. I tone it down to foundation, powder, lip color, and mascara. Mostly. I really try to, at least.
