If Kim Kardashian Can't Color Block, Who Can?

Has anyone else noticed that color blocking is a tricky little trend? Kim, a former stylist herself, could NOT pull off this look the other night. I've noticed even celebs are missing the mark on this trend lately.

Sure, it seems simple. Just wear a solid color and pair it with different bright, solid or neutral colors. But, I've had trouble putting together a cute color blocking outfit, yet I'm determined to try this bright bold trend before it fades.

I thought this outfit Kim wore last week was unflattering on her, what do you think?

Gucci models show off the amazing color blocking trend. (Kim's exact dress)

The look straight off the runway seems a little overkill.
(I like JLO and Olivia Wilde's take on the trend but don't think I'd wear it.)

Keys to Color Blocking

1. This current spring/summer trend combines the use of two or more blocks of color

2. The brighter the color the better. Usually. Pink, emerald green, tangerine, lemon yellow, turquoise all work

3. You can choose a dress or handbag that already does the color blocking for you

I'm a little timid of this trend so I'd try two colors at first in the same color family with a pair of
neutral heels or wedges. This Lanvin dress on actress Emma Stone is one of my favorites.

This H&M dress does the trend for you. Yay! $34.95

I think this is one of those trends where trying too hard with TOO many colors or copying the look straight off the runway will NOT work. I've seen a lot of great outfit posts lately with this trend, so it can be done. Here's one very unique example I liked on the blog VivaLuxury. Check it out here

Do you like Color Blocking? And what colors or styles in your closet have worked best?

I might have to copy you. ;)

  1. For guys, it's a way of life. Black slacks, blue shirt.

For me, looking at those images, it looks like a 1989-1991 retro-chic look. It's just not workin ladies...

  2. yes and her belt looks too tight!
I love color blocking but yes, we have to be careful!

  3. I agree with you. Kim looked obnoxious. But I suppose it matches who she is. I did like some of the runway pics...but only in the muted colors.

  4. I completely agree with you Kim Kardashian just doesnt look good. definitely not a flattering cut on her.

  5. I totally agree with you. The primary colors are a bit much and those diff colors look great on models. Regular people even celebs not so much. But I think your suggestion of colorblocking w/in the family color is a brilliant idea for everyone so they pull it off this trend. I love Emma stone's dress so much!

  6. I LOVE Color blocking! Will be posting about this tomorrow. Oh Kim...I really love her but she went all wrong with this outfit. It does not look very good on her and it's hard for her to be unflattering in anything. Yikes.

  9. I am a big fan of bright colours and find the trend so inspiring but am yet to pull it off. I think if the skirt portion of Kim's dress was a brighter orange it might work but for now it's just dull and uninspired.

  12. I love this trend.. And I myself would like to try it but it's not as easy as one can think these celebs make it look easy, even though it can be tricky to pull it off..
I love the Gucci dress, and I agree it didn't look flattering on Kim... It did look great on others though I blogged about this outfit myself yesterday =)
Great post as always Hun =D

  14. Grrrrreeat post missy!

Agree, Kim CANNOT pull that Gucci look off. But then again, I'm not a fan of her at the best of times. I really like how Olivia Wilde has made it work though, I think adding a neutral colour (black, white, nude etc) helps tone it down and not look like rainbow vomit, haha really...

  15. Love color blocking, and it seems SO easy but you're right, if it isn't done right it can just look a bit crazy. I think the thing I hate about Kim's dress is the cutout, it doesn't flatter her body, and the turquoise shoes are a bit of overkill.
BUT, can't wait to see you try this trend, we're definitely going to be posting about it soon!

  16. Being an Indian I have been color blocking all my life ... and will probably continue to do so even when it goes out of trend. Most of my outfits are of bright colors and definitely more than 2 colors at all times. Phew, enough about me. I think the skirt is not of the right color and fit for Kim #fail! Love than Lanvin dress ... only if there was wind blowing at all times to actually show its full-ness! :)

  21. ooh wow. that outfit is not flattering on kim's body. even if it were in solid black, still not cute! i think anyone can pull off color blocking as long as the pieces that are worn are figure flattering. xx

  22. Wowww that dress is really unflattering on her. It gives her...muffin top around the ribcage and is too tight around the booty. I just know she was feeling lightheaded the whole night, because there's no way she was getting enough oxygen in that dress. Poor thing.

And I like color-blocking, but it doesn't work for me. I think you can do it though...you have great style. n_n

  23. LOVE your H&M pick for color blocking! I like Olivia Wilde's interpretation of it the best, but she could wear a sack and still be gorgeous! Great trend, cant wait to attempt it! :)

  27. I think it has to do with her size that makes it unflattering. Notice from the first picture that she has a bit of gut. I think she thought she could pull it off but well... it didn't.

  28. I like color blocking but sometimes too many colours is just enough. You have to be an expert at this, I think. H&M dress is fine though. Love it :) Oh, and that dress on Kim Kardashian is great, it's her body figure that doesn't work unfortunately. If you see dress on those Gucci models- amazing.

  35. Kim's dress does not suit her body, she's too curvy for this outfit and overfills it, this requires a skinny, boyish figure to give it the curves it misses naturally. As for colour blocking, other than the runway models, in your 3rd set, the 1st and last picture have achieved it best. We don't see JLO's from the front as we do with Kim but I suspect the fit isn't flattering on her either as she is equally voluptuous. For colour blocking much relies on your figure type as it's a hit or miss. Thanks for dropping by, come back soon to the-wardrobe-stylist.blogspot.com.

  58. I don't think it was the color blocking trend that Kim couldn't pull off, I think it was the dress itself. She's too curvy for that curve accentuating dress. My fave look is Camilla Belle's ensemble. Loving those colors and it looks classy! I'm definitely going to be looking for a cheaper version of it.

  59. Hi! I think that dress is hard to pull off unless you are a tall skinny girl. Its not meant for someone who's curvy, it does look unflattering on Kim. I also have the dress from H&M, but in white & blue.

  67. Hi sweetie! I use color-blocking often when creating illustrations for the card line. For instance, in one of the notecards, the umbrella of the hotdog cart the girls were at was pink and orange and that established the bright color scheme for their outfits too ;) Sometimes it's a little more difficult to make that work in real life! xo
