Cobras, Tigers and Leopard Print, Oh My!

What animal scares you the most? There is only one thing that terrifies me more than being thrown into a murky swamp, and that’s being thrown into a snake infested murky swamp. The last few mornings I’ve cringed as I hear the search is STILL on for an adolescent 20-inch long Egyptian Cobra that ESCAPED from the Bronx Zoo in New York earlier this week.

Egyptian Cobra

The deadly missing cobra forced the Zoo to close the reptile house and the massive search continues. I’m worried about it slithering to San Francisco, but this is the same type of Ancient Egyptian Cobra that Cleopatra was rumored to have used to commit suicide and the venom of this cobra can kill a human in 15 minutes or less, so I’m sure that’s freaking people out even more.

The story has been all over the news and an entertaining fictional Twitter account pretending to be the cobra has over 140,000 followers. So if you want to read about the Cobra’s updates and travels throughout New York City you can follow @BronxZoosCobra.

One of her entertaining tweets:
“Dear @CharlieSheen, know what’s better than tiger’s blood? Cobra venom.” #winning #snakeonthetown

What are your thoughts on wearing animal print? I think partly why they’re so fun is they’re racy, daring, exotic and can be classy. Most importantly, animal print can spice up even the most basic casual outfit.

Here are some of my general rules to wearing animal print:
1. Keep it Simple. You only need 1 clothing item in the animal print you’re wearing. No other patterns.

Jennifer Lopez in Brian Atwood

JLo and her leopard print booties

I tried a leopard skirt last year going out with my sister

2. WEAR print in the actual color of the animal. Leopard print should be brown tones, Zebras are
black white, tigers are orange and black. You get the idea.
Last time I checked, I’ve never seen a cherry red, lavender or teal leopard.

keri kylie rihanna dolce NO+No+leopards

3.  How do those sayings go? “Leopards don’t change their spots,” and “Tigers don’t change their stripes.”
Maybe you could NEVER see yourself wearing animal print and if so, here’s my recommendation.
ADD a pair of leopard flats to your wardrobe. They make any simple neutral outfit look more
fashionable, plus they’re comfortable and you won’t feel like it’s TOO much.

Mom Injects Her 8-Year-Old Daughter with Botox!?!

Botox before Chickenpox? I couldn’t believe the headline I read last week titled, “I’m injecting my eight-year-old with Botox and getting her body waxes so she’ll be a superstar.” This was more extreme than an episode of “Nip/Tuck” and more psycho than some of the parents on “Toddlers and Tiaras.”

A pic from “Toddlers and Tiaras”

The story, first reported by The Sun (so definitely consider the source) was picked up by non-tabloid news outlets last week. I was shocked to see pictures of the 34-year-old mom injecting her 8-year-old daughter’s face with Botox and other fillers every few months which she does in the hopes of keeping her “baby faced” so she’ll have a better chance to become a model, actress and superstar as a teenager.

You can see the original Sun report and actual pictures of the mother and daughter from the story here:

botox effect

The mother from Birmingham, England buys the Botox and Restaylane online and injects them herself. According to the story, they are now living in San Francisco. What would I do if I ever see this awful mother and her poor little daughter walking down the street in SF? Well, nothing really, I’d just walk by feeling really sorry for the daughter.

Besides the fact it must be illegal to order these products online to inject into a child this young, I would assume this is considered child abuse in California, right?

If this story is true and she’s getting this many injections at such a young age, what will she look like by college? Hopefully not this….

All kidding aside, this is one of the most disturbing stories I’ve read in a while, so I thought I’d share. But hopefully this mother is stopped by family, friends or the law before she psychologically butchers her daughter’s self-esteem and causes her anymore physical pain.

I remember my mom making a rule I had to wear a dress once a week in elementary school, even if I did wear them with my hi-top Converse. Could you imagine having a mother who forced you to get waxes and Botox injections when you were 8-years-old? It’s almost too crazy to even think about.

My Cuz Goes Retro! How to Create Your Own Pin-Up Look

As you’ve heard, sadly Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor passed away earlier this week. While she will always be known for her acting, jewelry collection, her personal life, and charity work, she will definitely be remembered for her timeless beauty and glamour.

Have you ever wanted to create your own retro Pin-Up look?

                                                                 Elizabeth Taylor

Last year I dressed up my cousin, Yovana, in vintage high waisted short shorts, which were actually her mother’s from the late 60’s, and a white collared shirt I found around the house. It brought back memories of when we used to play barbies a decade ago. Then I did her makeup creating a vintage, retro look.

Here’s some basic makeup essentials to follow if you’re going retro:

1. Makeup should not be too shimmery or glittery. I used my favorite “going out” foundation on Yovana. It’s
Makeup Forever Mat Velvet. Her skin is perfect, but this gives skin a flawless look for evenings or if
you want more coverage. This brand is a celeb fave and makeup artist fave. I buy mine at Sephora.

2. Always use black eyeliner. It makes the difference in defining your eyes. My favorite, which lasts all day
is actually a brand called Prestige, which you can find at CVS and Walgreens for under $5.

3. Once you’ve added a slight pop of blush and a little bronzer, define your eyebrows and add some
light neutral eyeshadow and contour the crease with a darker brown. Cover Girl Brown Smolder
works well. Then curl your lashes and add black mascara.  simple smile

4. Don’t forget the lipstick. I added a few different MAC shades like “Subculture” and “Spice” lipliners
with MAC “Jubilee” lipstick. Red lipstick is always show-stopping if you’re more daring.

And now for the finished look….
I Present Vintage Yovana:

Black and white photos are always classic

Don’t forget about the classic Marilyn Monroe pose:
A few more tips:
1. Don’t be afraid to wear vintage clothes. If you’re going out, you can pair it with something modern.
2. Big curls, and bouncy, wavy hair always helps. If you have shorter hair, you can do a retro updo.
3. Have fun and be confident like you’re a 50’s Pin-up girl.

Try the pin-up look sometime. If it’s too extreme or not your style once you’re done, you can always wash your face and call it a night. 😉
But I think you’ll love it.
Have a great weekend!  Coming Next Week on Savvy Spice…

Friends With “Fashion” Benefits?

Every woman needs to have at least one friend with “fashion” benefits. This is a true friend who you trust to tell you how you really look in an outfit. It’s a friend who knows what styles work best on your body, and who genuinely wants you to look your best. I know I want the truth when I ask my mom, sister or friends how an outfit looks and visa versa if one of them asks me or texts me an outfit pic asking what I think.

I thought about this concept when I was shopping last week and saw a group of three friends in their 20’s at Forever 21. One of them popped out of her fitting room wearing shorts (without heels) similar to the these in the pic I found below. Let me mention, this was a small, petite girl, just a smidge taller than Snookie.

She looked at her two friends who peaked their heads out from their changing rooms and asked,

“What do you think of these shorts, are they cute on me? I feel like they might be too boyish.”

“Oh no, those shorts are totally cute,” one friend replied.

“Yea, they look good. They’re flattering,” the other girl lied.

I walked into my fitting room and was annoyed this girl’s “friends” weren’t telling her the truth. Not only were these shorts wrong for her body, they weren’t flattering or cute at all. I was so close to saying something to her about trying a different style, but then I caught a glimpse of my reflection after spinning class and my makeup was smeared, my ponytail was looking crazy and I was in gym clothes so I knew there was no way they’d take my advice.

She would have been much better off with her small frame in a shorter denim pair like these below from F21 with wedges or heels to elongate her legs.

Why wouldn’t her friends tell her the truth? Apparently it’s more common than I thought. Did you know there are popular fashion websites now like “” and “” where you can bypass your friends and family (especially if you don’t trust their fashion opinion) and upload a pic of your outfit asking total strangers who visit the site to vote whether they “like” or “hate” your outfit?

And now I’d like to introduce you to just a couple of my friends with “fashion benefits” who I can always count on to give me great style tips.

Laura: We can always count on each other for the honest, often bluntly put, truth. She visited me a couple weeks ago and I was loving her outfit on that chilly, rainy day in SF.

Here she is in a Burberry trench, leopard scarf and Seven skinny jeans.

Reminds me of this trench Blake Lively wore recently.

Shirt- Joey, Watch-Michael Kors. And the purse is Gucci (Little Miss Fancy Pants 😉

Oh yea, she bought some Tory Burch flats that day.

“Oh, those shoes are so cute, I want to get a pair,” I said as Laura revealed her new purchase.

“Yea, you definitely should, these are perfect for work too,” she replied.

Before I could get too excited about buying a pair of my own, her fashionisto fiance, Sean, chimed in, “Those Tory Burch shoes have been around so long, for years!”

Yea, Laura and I both knew that. The point is a real friend doesn’t care if her friend copies her look and buys the same dress, jeans, shoes or purse. (As long as she doesn’t wear it to the same event)

NEXT Friend: Gigi
We have so much fun shopping together in Southern California a few times each year and if we both find the same dress and like it, we buy it. For example, last year, we both bought the same dress below:

Gigi+ dress

Which is a knockoff (under $30) of the Alexander Wang dress worn by Paris and Rihanna in ’09 ($795)

Sorry to bore any guys reading this. From what I hear they don’t really share clothes, especially shoes, as much as women do. But, I think these are the three most important qualities to know if you have a friend or a friend with “fashion” benefits:

1. You can always count on the person to tell you the truth whether you look great or should change.
2. You can loan each other clothes with the expectation they’ll be taken care of and returned. But also with
the understanding that drinks spill, dry-cleaning gets lost, etc. so don’t loan out family heirlooms.
3. A true friend genuinely wants you to look your best and doesn’t care if you copy her style.

Can you think of any other qualities?

Levi Welcomes New Denim & Kandee Johnson to SF

It was a cold, windy, rainy afternoon this past Saturday in San Francisco. My friend, brother and I made our way through Union Square to watch some of the March Madness basketball games. I wanted to stop into Levi’s where they were having a “Calling All Cuves” event promoting their new Curve ID custom fit jeans system. I’m sure you’ve seen some of these ads.

s curve id
BUT, I also wanted to stop by Levi’s because I’d heard my favorite makeup blogger, Kandee Johnson, was going to be there. And she has some of the best beauty and make up tips!

I included Kandee’s video in my post about how to get bigger fuller lips with make up.

IMG 5985

I really need to learn my lesson trying to take guys shopping.

IMG 5976
They saw a huge line teenage girls, bloggers and fans waiting to meet Kandee and said,
“Really Dale? You’re crazy if you think we’re going to wait!? We’re going to miss March Madness,
CAN we please go?”
Guys and women’s fashion blogs just don’t mix. It was so stormy and I didn’t want to walk home without an umbrella, so I agreed to leave with them……

IMG 5979

But luckily, as Kandee walked by I was able to say hello and she’s just as nice, pretty and
super friendly in person as she is in her YouTube videos and her blog

IMG 5974

The snacks, Pellegrino and non-alcoholic Pomegranate Mojitos were a nice treat.

IMG 5978

                                                            Even the guys liked them.

IMG 5980

                                                             So…much….Denim everywhere!

IMG 5982

Brothers can be so annoying….Guess I’ll try on the Curve ID Jeans later. simple smile

Then it was time to bundle up and head out for the night with friends.

Oh yea, Here’s the bubbly Kandee and the link to her Youtube channel:

CLOSED: My 1st Giveaway: Clothes & Couture Candy

Did you hear about Kim Kardashian and her million dollar sucker? And I’m not talking about the debut of her new song. She posed with a million dollar diamond encrusted lollipop earlier this month when she attended the opening of The Sugar Factory American Brasserie in Las Vegas.

Anyway, it’s Friday so I decided it’s time for my first giveaway as a new blogger. simple smile

I thought her top was bad…

Kim+K Sugar+factory
Until I saw the satin skirt, eww. Her heels are cute.

First, I love candy! I think it’s safe to say I’m addicted to sour candy and throughout my life some of my favorite candy has been discontinued. I went to the Sugar Factory candy store last summer in Vegas and their sparkly lollipops were cute, but I’ve never thought of a celebrity endorsed candy as an accessory so I decided to hold off until the next trip. simple smile

According to their site, “Couture Lollipops make candy exciting, fashionable and collectable.”
I can’t argue with that.

A Signature “Couture Pop” retails for $25

Since some of my favorite candies have been discontinued, I’ve had to design my own candy recipe over the years creating sour licorice out of good old fashioned Red Vines.

I’m calling them Tiger Blood Sour Stix for the time being. Sorry, they’re not in stores….yet. 😉

ONE person will Win:
A Signature Sugar Factory Couture Pop (Flavor is Winner’s Choice)
